Next door to Old Penang Guesthouse, the restored colonial Red Inn offers charm, personable staff and spotless dormitory accommodation (along with a handful of private rooms which we were told are "always full"). As with the other Red Inn properties, free breakfast comes standard and free WiFi is advertised. We were shown a three-bed and four-bed dorm, the latter was downstairs, a bit dark and cramped, but the upstairs three-bed dorm, towards the front of the house, was a far better spaced out deal. Shared bathrooms are clean but on the ground floor you need to walk through the common room to get from some of the rooms to the showers. The ground floor has an atrium-like affair with a raised wooden platform that forms the main common area, which is furnished with a big TV and free tea and coffee. Out by reception is a single internet terminal. Staff are helpful and friendly.
