Noordin Mews

Excellent flashpacker value

What we say: 4 stars

From the team behind the Galle Fort Hotel in Sri Lanka, Noordin Mews bills itself as "affordable luxury accommodation for today's flashpacker in the heart of George Town" and we couldn't say it any better. While the hotel is a bit out of the tourist section of Georgetown (Chulia Street is 15 minutes on foot) it more than compensates with excellent value accommodation, a swimming pool and great facilities. Rooms are of a very generous size with a firm bed and lounge by the window and the bathrooms are immaculate. The entire property is decorated in a Chinese retro style inspired by 1950s Asian cinema and fashion, and we found it to be utterly charming. The main building is a classic 1920s Peranakan shophouse and pretty much our only complaint would be that the froot door needs a handle on the outside (you have to ring a bell for entry and the bell can be heard from the rooms -- at all hours). If you can't quite stretch to a heritage property like 23 Love Lane, Noordin Mews would be our first pick in Georgetown. Rates include breakfast. Excellent value, though shop online for special deals. Noordin Mews has a second property Muntri Mews on Lebuh Muntri, but Noordin Mews is by far the better option.
