Good budget guesthouse
Lot 55, Kampung Tanjung Mali, Jalan Pantai Cenang, Pantai Cenang T: (04) 955 2585, (01) 0234 2737
Rumours Guesthouse has evolved over the years from a basic Pantai Cenang budget spot to a rather artsy, laidback backpacker favourite. Located 100 metres from the thoroughfare of Jalan Pantai Cenang, they are sufficiently inland to escape traffic noise yet just a short walk to the sandy shore. They have selections suitable for everyone from tight-budget dorm seekers to families preferring affordable digs with a few creature comforts.
The grounds of Rumours look like a rustic family estate, as their various wooden and brick chalets are generously spaced apart. Set against a backdrop of distant hills, the surrounding greenery creates a quiet country appeal with plenty of space. The guesthouse compound houses 10 double bed standard rooms, three dormitories and two family rooms.
The Long House has basic tiled-floor rooms, some with fans and others air-con, and all have attached baths with cold-water showers, starting at 100 ringgit per night. Being part of the original guesthouse, these simple rooms are smaller, but each room comes with a private veranda overlooking the back field and the sounds of nature are at your doorstep.
The additional five standard rooms are situated in a separate building with a choice of fan or air-con and all come with hot-water showers. Simple yet roomy, they enjoy tropical interior palettes, from tangerine to blue. The attached bathrooms are modern and the neutral coloured tiles keep things bright and airy.
Rumours now leads the pack with their new dormitory additions and the price can’t be beat. They have one female-only dorm and two mixed, adding an extra 20 beds available for just 25 ringgit per person with shared cold water showers and toilets. Two family rooms are also available on their own patch of grassy knoll, with a five-person limit and inclusive of air-con, TV and hot-water showers for 200 ringgit per night.
The open-air common area is home to the community television and billiard table as well as WiFi central. Touches of decorative graffiti add some extra splashes of colour and honour the artistic sides of previous guests.
There is no food available on the premises but all are welcome to use the communal refrigerator and kitchenette. There are plenty of eatery options nearby, from roadside hawkers to fine dining as well as the convenience of several minimarts and local cafes. Car, scooter and bike rental shops are in the area and plenty of taxis can be located at nearby Underwater World.
Rumours Guesthouse is one of several Langkawi hotels that offer camping, and it’s just ringgit per person. It is mainly offered to guests who arrive to find no rooms available but they open their grassy lawn to all hearty adventurers, even if they do have rooms available. They may also throw in use of a tent free of charge.
