Great value in the north
What we say:
Off the beaten path, the Isa Motel sits solo across from the nearly deserted stretch of the white sands of Tanjung Rhu beach. With Ko Tarutao visible on the offshore horizon, even the nearby cement factory cannot mar the simple beauty — truly!
Isa Motel’s three-storey cement block building sits off the main road at the end of a long gravelly driveway, mansion style. Their 18 rooms all have sea views as well as small verandas with tables and chairs situated nearby. Open the windows and the onshore breezes are a welcome reminder that you are on holiday.
The pastel-coloured rooms are more than just adequate, with fat comfortable mattress, hot water shower, flat screen TV, mini fridge, wardrobe, kettle, safe and a small desk. They also have free WiFi access in the rooms as well as a small on-site restaurant. Breakfast is not included, but for 10 ringgit per person and a heads up the day before, it can be prepared for you. At 100 ringgit for a standard for two or 120 ringgit for three, the Isa Motel is an excellent find.
Unfortunately the Isa offers no on-site transportation options such as bicycle or even motorbike rentals, so guests will need to rely on taxis or walk unless they have their own wheels. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because the fare for a one-way taxi from the Kuah ferry terminal or the Langkawi International Airport to the Isa Motel is only about 40 ringgit.
The remote location may not be the most convenient, but travellers may be pleased to find not only a pristine beach across the street, but a Western restaurant option as well. Scarborough’s Fish and Chips has reasonably priced eats as well as cold beer and wine. Drink prices are also low enough to pass as happy hour prices and this is a Langkawi hotspot sunset view.
Just up the road, about a 15-minute walk away, is the Padang Lalang roundabout with a selection of small shops and local eateries, as well as the Ayer Hangat night market on Fridays. For those with transportation, sightseeing options are quite plentiful in the area. Komplex Kraft and Ayer Hangat Hot Springs are a 10-minute drive away. And a visit to the top of nearby Gunung Raya, Langkawi’s highest peak, is not to be missed with its spectacular panoramic view.
With the wide expanse of one of Langkawi’s best beaches outside your door, Isa Motel is one of the best value options on the north side of the island.
