Our Long Beach backpacker pick
A short walk back off the beach, up the hill behind Matahari, Bintang Chalet offers solid and very clean wooden bungalows scattered across the hillside on both sides of the restaurant.
The huts are all fan-cooled and come in both share bathroom and private bathroom varieties. Facilities include a small veranda with a table setting and a mosquito netted bed -- what more do you need? Shared bathrooms are clean and well kept. The best asset here should be the restaurant -- anyone who has spent time in a Thai bungalow operation will feel right at home here, with its fallen tree formwork and broad roof. It was however closed, "waiting for food", when we stayed for two nights in April and it wasn't clear if it would ever open for more than breakfast and maybe lunch. There's also a book swap on site. Views are quite pretty over the distant ocean and Perhentian Besar and the sunrise is good from here -- don't expect to sleep in! Jungle backed, a trail behind Bintang leads to Coral beach placing you well for the run over there for sunset. Overall this is better value than Lemon Grass, just not on the beach, and this is our backpacker lodging of choice on Long Beach. Reservations recommended in high season, especially over weekends.
