This back-to-basics lodge has a loyal following from the gap year crowd. Accommodation is mattresses on the floor of doorless wooden huts and the showers are buckets in the middle of the jungle, but the rustic living conditions are half the fun of staying here. The guides are as good at socialising as they are at spotting animals – expect soccer games in the jungle and acoustic jam sessions after the buffet-style dinners. Bring extra cash for beer and the fishing trip – whatever you catch will be cooked up for dinner. Tours depart around 13:00 from Uncle Tan's B&B in Sepilok on the road to the orangutan centre. You can spend the night before your jungle tour here for 48 ringgit in the fan dorm or 100 ringgit in an air-con double room including all meals. (We visited this lodge in person.)
