The Last Frontier Resort

Comes highly recommended

What we say: 3.5 stars

As long as you don't mind a few stairs (a few hundred actually – think of it as practice for Mount Kinabalu), The Last Frontier is highly recommended for travellers on a flashpacker budget. The rooms are comfortable, especially considering you're in the middle of nowhere, with one or two beds, fan and ensuite bathroom with hot shower. The views from the hilltop are amazing as are the wildlife-spotting river cruises, with staff who speak excellent English. Meals are served in an open-air restaurant and the food is a real treat. Fussy eaters will appreciate Western options like spaghetti and pancakes. Transport from Sandakan is an additional 40 ringgit each way in a shared van. (Please note we did not inspect this place.)
