What we say: 
This research station along the Kinabatangan River is an interesting alternative to the touristy jungle lodges. Guests stay in four-bedded rooms in a lodge shared by grad students and visiting documentary makers. There aren't tourist activities like river cruises, but you can trek the surrounding trails and, if the scientists like you, tag along on their field work – it may be anything from observing slow loris behaviour to putting radio collars on elephants. The minimum stay is two nights and long-term volunteering opportunities can be arranged. Guests pay 110 ringgit per night for room and board plus 50 ringgit for boat transfers from the Batu Puteh Jetty and 100 ringgit as a conservation fee. The Field Centre has WiFi when the electricity is on and posts regular updates on Facebook about their research. (Please note that we did visit this place in person.)
