Barefoot Sukau Lodge

A few more creature comforts

No pic at the moment -- Sorry!

What we say: 3 stars

This lodge offers a few more creature comforts than the other cheapies, with fan-cooled private rooms and ensuite bathrooms with hot water. The wooden longhouse overlooks the Kinabatangan River so when you're not out on the boat tours you can spot jungle critters right from the veranda. The food is better than average and the fridge is stocked with ice-cold beer. Packages include two river cruises per day and additional ones are offered at 40 ringgit per person. The lodge is located near the village of Sukau within earshot of the mosque and its regular calls to prayer. Pick-up from Sandakan is a bit expensive at 45 ringgit per person per way, so you can save some money by taking the local minibus to Sukau. (Please note we did not visit here in person.)
