Mountain Resthouse

The best on a budget

What we say: 4.5 stars

It's a short walk from Kinabalu Park to this homey guesthouse built on the hillside. Inside the two wooden buildings you'll find a mishmash of simple rooms. Even though they call the bunkbed-furnished rooms "dorms" you won't be sharing with strangers -- it's 20 ringgit per person if there's more than two of you or 30 ringgit for a solo traveller to have a room all to themselves. You can also pay a bit more for a room with an attached bathroom. Don't expect many creature comforts -- the hot water shower was a trickle and there's a communal TV with a few channels -- but it's clean and excellent value. Mountain Resthouse is run by a sweet family who'll happily cook you dinner (cheaper than the nearby restaurants) and provide extra blankets.
