In the high-density backpacker area of Taman Melaka Raya, some are winners and some are not... The staff at Sunny's seemed surprised that we made our way there of our own free will (we later heard stories about their bus station touts). The rooms vary in size and bed arrangements, but all are similarly grungy with sagging beds, badly worn fabrics, and a peeling, paper-like covering on the concrete floor. All the rooms have windows to the outside and some have balconies (if you do stay here, ask for one of these), but the view is of the piles of rubble out back. Despite what the hostel websites say, there's no internet access, no on-site café, and they'll want a couple ringgit for using the basic kitchen facilities. The common area is like someone's basement den -- an old TV, mismatched sofas, an impressive DVD collection, and smokers puffing away indoors. One final note: Check your mattress for creepy crawlies -- we spotted some bed bugs.
