Kancil Guesthouse

A charming heritage guesthouse

What we say: 4 stars

In a restored Chinese ancestral house full of antiques and potted plants is the quaint Kancil Guesthouse. Two long, narrow floors boast tidy but basic rooms with beds, a fan and, in some, a small table. Only the rooms on the second floor have real windows, and the walls of the first floor singles don't reach the ceiling so the light and noise flow right in all day and all night long. Bathroom facilities are shared (two upstairs and two downstairs) and the shower is cold water. There are some sluggish old computers for guest use (3.50/hour, self-recorded in a log book) and a lovely garden out back to enjoy a coffee and novel from their library, but the mosquitoes are pesky in the evening and there's no other real common area. The staff are very personable and will cook you breakfast in the AM (not included, 5 to 7 ringgit for a set. The location – quite a way east of the historic district – is less than perfect, and busy Parameswara Road is devoid of a footpath making the walk there a little nerve-wracking.
