Another offering from the cluster of guesthouses along Jalan Melaka Raya, Shirah's Guesthouse won't disappoint weary travellers. Follow the sign up the stairs to discover a brightly painted common room, spic and span dorms, and an assortment of private rooms with some unexpected touches like balconies, antique furnishings, and even one room with a four poster canopy bed. The shared bathroom facilities are regularly cleaned and there's also a communal kitchen, rooftop terrace, and common room with TV, travel info, books and board games. The owners are Muslim and prefer guests to not consume alcohol on the premises.

Bedbugs
I was charged 25 ringgit for a non-attached single, and this price was posted on the wall. The room itself seemed very open, i.e. the door was made up of open slats so it was almost like being open. The room itself (room 7) smelt a lot like cats and had cat hairs. When I lay on the bed, after about ten minutes, I got bitten by bedbugs, which I also saw, so I checked out (the owners had left). I forgot my shirt so I went back next day and the owners apologised and offered to give me 20 of my 25 ringgit back. On the plus side, I bumped into a French guy who was staying there and he told me that he'd seen a few bugs but had never been bitten. Also, the place was very friendly, so it might just be room 7 and everywhere else is OK?

Pleasant place, friendly owner.
Paid 30 RM for double with fan, and weren't disappointed. Pretty clean, welcoming atmosphere with rooftop terrace and TV for the travel-weary, free tea or coffee. The owner, Steve, is what made this place: very friendly, knowledgeable and went out of his way to help you. Only problem was our room was directly below the TV lounge, so if other travellers stay up it can be noisy.

BED BUGS!
The guesthouse owner was very friendly (almost too friendly) and talked us into a dorm room with the promise of a double the following night. Had a very disturbed night sleep, 5am on turning the light on we saw our beds crawling with bed bugs, and I was bitten all over. The owner must of known about this as on research there were others reporting bed bugs to him as far back as April 2009. We also noticed the room had a sweet smell to it which we have since found is a tell tale sign of an infestation. Melaka seems to have a problem with bed bugs, as other guesthouses are also showing up with warnings. So do some careful research before heading there.
