On a street of architecturally stunning homes, the Baba House is one of the most painstakingly restored. A night in this gorgeous Peranakan clan house costs a lot less than you probably would imagine, making it much better value than the boutique Hotel Puri across the street. The air-con rooms have a TV, IDD phone, coffee and tea making facilities and en suite bathrooms. The rooms are outfitted with antique wooden furnishings, but seem a little drab – the house is at its most beautiful in the common areas like the hallways, courtyard and lobby. There is free WiFi for guests and other services include massage, city tours and bicycle hire. If you're eager to try some local Baba-Nyonya delicacies there's a Peranakan restaurant next door. Rates include breakfast but not service charge (10%) and local taxes (5%).

* Travelfish researchers visit and review properties on an anonymous basis. By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure.
