A blast from the past

Description
The New 7th Storey Hotel actually has nine levels, not seven; and at more than 50 years old, it's hardly new either. Established in 1953, it was one of the stalwarts of the scene back when there was no scene -- just about everybody on the Hippie Trail remembers it. 50 years on, it still packs in the crowd for very good reasons. Three to four-dorms beds in each spacious room share their own air-con, mirror and washing facilities (clean shower outside). Military quality 'non squeaky' dorm beds and clean sheets are the order of the day in this no-nonsense establishment. Similarly no-nonsense private rooms, both with shared facilities and ensuite (large, good toilets), provide no-frills but spacious and well-ventilated rooms at under $90. The $3 premium for a deluxe room is well worth it: the deluxe gives plenty of floor space to stretch out in what's possibly the cheapest and most spacious ensuite in the city. Its ancient lift, probably the last mechanical lift in Singapore with its own operator -- the appeal of NSS may not be immediately apparent to everyone, but what it lacks in modernity it makes up with plenty of character and understated elegance. The old school family atmosphere provides a genuinely warm assistance from a distance. As a bonus: one of the country's best Chinese steamboat restaurants is to be found at the back of the hotel facing an open field. Staying at the NSS is much like the hotel itself -- a blast to the past, perhaps, but definitely an unforgettable experience.

It's all smiles and cleanliness here ... and a friendly chat with the lift driver! The deluxe room was S$80 on the net and worth even sen. Coin operated internet and stumbling distance to shops, food food food and Bugis MRT.

Sleepy Sam's Bed and Breakfast
55 Bussorah Street
Smack in front of the Sultan Mosque, there can't be a better location -- Sleepy Sam's claims to be a 'luxury Singapore hostel'. And they do deliver. A few shophouses in this quaint neighbourhood were converted into a bright, cozy and friendly hostel with relaxing hues of dark wood. With free... more

The Hive Backpackers' Hostel
269A Lavender Street
Set up by a bunch of enthusiastic friends, The Hive had something good going for them: perhaps it's the lovingly decorated rooms and dorms, and the free broadband and WiFi. When we visited though The Hive was in the midst of an extensive renovation and lacked atmosphere or warmth, though it does... more

Bugis Backpackers
162B Rochor Road, 3rd Level, Bugis Village
Up a flight of stairs in a busy shopping street and not well sign-posted, Bugis Backpackers won't win any awards for ease of access or neighbourhood ambience (it's a few units from KFC, and in between Sin Tat Toys and Bossini). Once you do locate the exact stairway, and after hauling yourself and... more

Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse
490 North Bridge Road, 2nd Floor
On the second floor above a coffeeshop across the road from the Hotel Intercontinental and Bugis Junction mall – Backpacker Cozy Corner has the distinction of having the cheapest dorm beds in Singapore. $10 buys a bed on the rooftop of the shophouse it's located in; in hot, humid Singapore... more

Waterloo Hostel
55 Waterloo Street, Catholic Welfare Building, #04-02
This Catholic-run hostel in the back lane of behind the art museum is oddly located on the fourth and fifth levels of the Catholic Welfare Building, but offers a range of good value accommodation for the traveller on a budget. The theme seems to be old-world furnishing dominated by wood and... more
