Managed by the Cathay group (Singapore's leading operator of cinemas, malls, and bowling alleys), Hangout is a fresh breath of air in every sense -- it's perched atop Mount Emily, perhaps Singapore's only hilltop hostel (or hotel). Climb up a long flight of stairs by the back, or by taxi through Mount Emily Park; Hangout is different, in a good way. 'Chic', 'fresh' and 'young' seem to be keywords here, apparent by the colour scheme (think fresh citrus) and deco of the lobby, dorms, rooms and facilities. Dorms are a clean, minimalist and immaculate affair with cheery bright walls and furniture, as are the shared toilets. A wide range of private rooms: functional doubles, as well as imaginatively arranged 'quad' and 'quin' rooms (a combination of sofa beds and queen beds), all done up in Hangout's characteristic style. It isn't just the rooms here, though: a small midrange bistro, Wild Rocket, is the hotel's main draw, featuring 'unfussy' modern comfort food (try the burger, the 'laksa pesto' pasta and desserts). It's not backpacker-cheap, but the food is very good. The restaurant also runs a lovely bar next door, Wild Oats, where one can drink either on the patio of a colonial mansion, or next to an art gallery. With good rooms, lots of vibe, just a short walk from Little India, Bugis and Orchard Road -- come hangout@Mt. Emily, definitely seek out this veritable oasis in the heart of the city, even if you have to climb. Rates below are walk-in -- book via their website for substantial discounts.
