The grand old dame of accommodation along Bencoolen, Strand has reigned supreme in that category between cheap dorms and expensive Singapore business class hotels. Service is famously curt (on the phone, as well as off), yet sufficient, like the state of their accommodation: you get what you pay for, with little reason to complain, nor to be pleasantly surprised. The hotel recently had a revamp of its interiors – the state of rooms is definitely a marked improvement from the previous. The dim rooms have good beds and some good bathtubs – that's about all that can be said of them. A new category of rooms, the Special Rooms were added during the revamp featuring specially designed rooms for couples; they might as well have said these were the rooms with some attempts at bright touches of paint and furnishings, and at design. Location-wise it is near Orchard, City Hall, Bugis and Little India, as well as near transport and eating – but with the recent unjustified increase in prices, these digs are definitely way overpriced. The exterior looks better than the insides, and the service doesn't help matters: enough said.
