What we say:

We used to rave about Hangout but prices have risen here significantly in the past few years, and are quite a bit higher for a dorm room compared to the competition these days. While the quoted website price for a dorm room is S$50++, internet rates are available, but you can only see these if you can find a room available on the dates you are after. Still, the location of Hangout near Orchard Road, as well as Little India and Bugis, is appealing, and it's also perched atop leaft Mount Emily; climb up a long flight of stairs by the back, or come by taxi through Mount Emily Park. The vibe Hangout exudes is hip and breezy style, with a fresh citrus-y minimalist theme. Rooms and dorms are immaculate affairs, with cheery bright walls and furniture, as are the shared toilets. A wide range of private rooms are available, but quite pricey, with functional doubles, as well as imaginatively arranged quad and quin rooms, which are a combination of sofa beds and queen beds. There's a rather cool rooftop area with a standing shower pool complete with deckchairs — an innovative installation in the tropics if ever we've seen one, as well as various hangout areas and free WiFi throughout. A decent restaurant and bar on-site, though a little pricey for backpacker fare, rounds out the what are now really funky midrange offerings @Hangout.
