The Club Hotel

Elegant and eccentric

What we say: 4.5 stars

What’s black and white with a dash of quirky humour? Singapore’s The Club boutique hotel – one of our top picks in the city state in the S$200-300 range.

Chic and understated.

A warm welcome from a room at The Club Hotel.

Located in the Ann Siang area on the edge of Chinatown, The Club hotel has an original style that’s a fun mix of old and new. Though it occupies a stately heritage building, inside The Club has a distinctively modern feel with quirky artwork, trendy F&B outlets and free WiFi for all guests.

The Club is intimately sized with just 22 guestrooms divided into three categories – club, signature and colonial. The main difference between them is the size, as all have the same amenities like an LCD TV, iPod dock, coffee/tea maker and a selection of Singapore lifestyle and fashion magazines for your reading pleasure.

Like the outside of the hotel, the rooms are painted a pristine shade of white and are furnished with white tables and comfy white beds. This colour scheme is not very forgiving of dirt, so you can be assured that the rooms are kept in impeccable condition. The ensuite bathrooms are only half white – they’re tiled in a bold black and white pattern – and feature a heavenly rainforest shower with a massage function.

Each room also has quirky artistic elements like carvings greeting guests in Chinese and English or tree branches stencilled on the walls. Instead of the usual ‘do not disturb’ door hanger, the doors have circular signs that you can spin to say things like ‘I need tranquility’. Even the hotel’s lobby is a work of eccentric art with a statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, the British colonial founder of Singapore, with his head obscured by the ruffled ceiling.

A night at The Club Hotel ranges from S$235 to S$295 depending on the time of the year and the room category. To that add an additional 10% service charge, 7% local taxes and S$15 per person if you would like breakfast. Children under the age of 12 stay for free.

At this midrange price it would be nice to have a swimming pool or a fitness centre, but unfortunately the heritage building is not able to offer these facilities. What The Club does have to offer is a great variety of places to eat and drink, including Le Chocolat for coffee and pastries, Le Tonkin for fine French-Vietnamese cuisine and Yin Yang bar for a cocktail overlooking Chinatown. The surrounding area is also filled with fine places to eat and shop and there are three MRT stations within walking distance.
