Quality over quantity
What we say:
Opened in December 2012, Adler bills itself as Singapore's first luxury hostel.
It might not be the first to try this, but it's probably the first to actually pull it off. The hostel is set in a Chinatown heritage building and has a sophisticated style from top to bottom. The lobby is tastefully decorated with framed artwork and vases of fresh orchids, and a cosy seating nook with a library of travel books is the perfect place to mingle and relax.
Upper floors have been converted into two dorm rooms -- mixed and female-only. Both are long and narrow with two tiers of beds on each side, and they feel like a sleeper car on a train, though with a lot more space. Each bunk comes with a thick mattress, silky sheets, a down quilt, two pillows, a privacy curtain, interior locker, reading lamp and a universal power point (perfect if you forget that adapter). Bathrooms are located directly off each dorm room so you won't need to traipse into a hallway after getting out of the shower.
The facilities alone are impressive, but perhaps the best feature of Adler is the travel-savvy owner and staff who aim to please. No extra fees are charged for necessities like WiFi and towels, hot breakfast is complimentary, fresh fruit is available for free throughout the day along with toast and Clipper fine tea and Gold roast coffee and a laptop is loaned out for free. The staff can even hook you up with discounted tickets to nightclubs and attractions. Recommended.
Nearest MRT: Chinatown.
