Adler Hostel

Quality over quantity

What we say: 4 stars

Embracing the principle of quality over quantity, Adler Hostel offers just 32 dorm beds with privacy curtains, silky soft bedding and lots of freebies. No wonder it calls itself Singapore’s first luxury hostel.

Adler is a a hostel with sophisticated style.

The prettiest little hostel in Singapore.

Located in a heritage building in the Chinatown neighbourhood, Adler Hostel has a sophisticated style from top to bottom. The lobby looks like it belongs to a boutique hotel, not a hostel, and is decorated with framed artwork and vases of fresh orchids. There’s a cosy seating nook with a library of travel books and a dining area where guests can mingle over the complimentary hot breakfast each morning served 08:00 till 10:00, or the all-day complimentary toast, Clipper fine tea and Gold Roast coffee.

The building’s upper floors have been converted into two dorm rooms – the second floor is the mixed dorm and the third floor is female-only. The dorms are long and narrow with two tiers of beds on each side, creating a setup that resembles a sleeper car on a train. Each “cabin” dorm bed is designed to be just as comfortable as a first-class ride with a thick mattress, silky sheets, a down quilt and two pillows. A privacy curtain allows you to turn your dorm bed into a private sanctuary complete with an interior locker, a reading light and a universal power point (perfect if you forgot to pack an adapter). Adding to intimate feel, the bathrooms and showers are attached to each dorm room so you’ll only be sharing with your room-mates.

A luxury hostel in the heart of Chinatown.

A luxury hostel in the heart of Chinatown.

As Adler Hostel only opened in December 2012, all of the facilities and furnishings are in immaculate condition. The hostel’s owner is a backpacker himself and his travel-saviness shows in the fact that there are no extra fees for necessities like WiFi, a clean towel, a locker and a hot breakfast. Furthermore, the dorms are air-conditioned 24 hours a day, the bathrooms are stocked with shower gel, there’s always a bowl of fruit in the kitchen and there’s even a laptop for guest use. The staff are eager to please and can recommend places to eat, hook you up with discounted tickets to nightclubs and attractions like the Singapore Zoo or even mail your postcards.

Best yet, a night at this luxury hostel costs less than you probably think. The rack rate is S$55 per night, but it drops down to S$48 with advance booking or if you’re staying for more than one night.
