The Inn at Temple Street
Cosy digs in the heart of Chinatown
What we say:
Set in a heritage building just steps from some of Chinatown's best food and attractions, The Inn's 42 rooms were renovated in 2011 and aren't looking too shabby these days.
While they're not huge by any stretch, they do offer more space than some of the shoebox-inspired digs that go for similar rates elsewhere. Standard rooms have a black and white theme with decorative touches like carved headboards and Peranakan-style floral tiles in otherwise basic bathrooms. A handful of family rooms with a queen and double bed are also available. Air-con, TV, telephone, coffee maker, hot water and a decent WiFi signal come standard.
Rooms are located on the upper floors, and this being a heritage building, you'll need to huff it up the stairs to reach them. Packed with antiques like porcelain plates, a gramophone and an antique steam iron, the lobby has a mini-museum feel that suits the historic neighbourhood. We wonder if they set up the antiques to keep customers distracted as the understaffed receptionists do their best to keep up.
Don't expect five-star service, but given the decent rooms and excellent location, The Inn is a fine choice. Prices fluctuate and rack rates are stupidly expensive -- almost double what we were quoted as walk-ins. Book online and well in advance for the best deals.
