What we say:
December 2013-opened AMOY is a 37-room hotel oozing chinoiserie chic. It’s a luxury option for Singapore, which means verrrry expensive, but if you’ve got the money to spend and like something a bit different, this is an enticing option.
Airport transfers are included in the room rate, and guests are welcomed by staff at at Fuk Tak Chi museum, a former temple and the headquarters for the Hakka and Cantonese communities here in the 1800s. At the rear of the museum a doorway leads into the AMOY’s lobby.
From the Chinese calligraphy and high-backed chairs in the lobby, to the rooms with doors adorned with different Chinese surnames, the AMOY (a term used for the Xiamen dialect in China’s southern Fujian province) has a charming take on Chinese chic. Even the bathroom sink — as well as other accessories in the room — keep to the style, with some pieces for sale. Thirteen of the rooms are singles, with prices starting at S$318++ to S$368++ for a double. (On Agoda, we found a single for S$254 and double for S$294.) WiFi is included, as is a simple buffet breakfast, a hop-on hop-off open top bus city tour, and free flow of drinks from the minibar (juices, soft drinks and Tiger beer, restocked once a day).
While there is no in-house dining option (breakfast is served in a corner of the lobby) until a restaurant opens later in 2014, the AMOY is located near several watering holes and restaurants, which you will be sharing with the city’s banking set given that it is right in the heart of the business district.
This also means that you’ll need to walk for about 20 minutes to get to Chinatown or the city centre. However, the Raffles Place and Telok Ayer train stations (part of the new downtown line) are nearby and get you to those areas in five minutes. Bottom line: AMOY is not a cheap sleep, but expect Chinois charm and a quality stay in this gorgeous boutique hotel.
