Rucksack Inn Hong Kong Street

Great budget choice

What we say: 4.5 stars

It’s really simple to write a review of Rucksack Inn’s Hong Kong Street location — as there was just about nothing we didn’t like about it. The staff are excellent. The dorms are spacious and immaculate. The bathrooms are spotless. The facilities are solid. The location is close to ideal for the Quays. Hmmmm how do I stretch this out a few hundred more words?

No this is not abandoned.

The most important thing when it comes to Rucksack Inn is to not judge a book by its cover. The graffiti-strewn bright red door opening to a forlorn set of stairs (also graffiti covered) leading up to the reception area is not exactly the most enticing welcome. But head up those stairs and you’ll see a massive pile of shoes to your left and a humming reception to your right. This is where the fun starts.

Many happy guests.

The staff here are excellent — very friendly and helpful. We actually confused our reservation date and showed up a day early, so we left promising to be back the next day. When we trundled in the next day the receptionist exclaimed, “Ahhh you’re back!” — we were treated like a repeat customer without even being one!

To the left of reception is a small kitchenette and dining area and to the right a small social area with both a big TV and a couple of guitars propped against the wall — all types catered to here! The vibe is welcoming and friendly and we warmed to it immediately.

The dorms are on the floors above and they’re very good. Our 10-bed mixed dorm was one of the cleanest and best kept dorms we saw in Singapore. It is mid-sized, with enough room to move around the metal-frame bunks, but it isn’t overloaded with space. Each bunk has its own bedlamp and in a nice touch, a silkish throw rather than a traditional top sheet. Air-con throughout, the temperature is chilled but comfortable. The evening we were there at least, the dorm was very quiet.

Spotless dorm.

Bathrooms maintain the high standard. We wouldn’t go as far as to say they are hotel standard as we do with Pod, but they are very good — far better than expected.

Rucksack Inn has a looser approach to security than some other hostels. Your keycode gets you in the door at ground level, but after that you have the run of the place — the dorms are not keycard protected. Lockers though are available.

Something for everyone.

Something for everyone.

As already mentioned, we found the staff to be particularly good here and very helpful with instructions for finding a couple of obscure spots. If we had to come up with anything to mention as being less than perfect, it would be that the hostel would be even better with more social space, but overall, this remains a very solid option.

Location wise, you’re a 10-minute walk to Clarke Quay MRT and Clarke Quay itself and about a 15-minute walk from Chinatown. BK Eating House, a five-minute walk away on South Bridge Road, is great for bargain basement food and beer — try the dry mee sua — yummo! If full, Five Stones Hostel is just down the road on South Bridge Road (and even closer to BK Eating House) and is a very worthwhile alternative.
