New Majestic Hotel
An inspiring boutique hotel
What we say:
If you have a good-sized budget for Singapore digs and a taste for the extraordinary, forget the chain hotels and book a night at the New Majestic. This is the definition of a boutique hotel with 30 unique rooms designed by local artists and thoughtful services like a consultation with a “guest experience ambassador” to perfect your Singapore sightseeing itinerary.
Located on the edge of Chinatown, the New Majestic’s quaint shophouse exterior belies the eccentric rooms inside. The fact that no two are alike makes it harder to give a general overview of what to expect, but based on the rooms we saw you’ll be blown away. Each room has a name hinting at its motif and is furnished with a mix of vintage and designer pieces. The walls have been decorated by local artists and may feature anything from a giant goldfish to a pair of human legs sticking out from the wall. The more expensive rooms have a loft-style design with a raised sleeping area, which means the lower area can be used for antique bath tubs or an outdoor extension to a private garden.
Proving they’ve got style and substance, the rooms have some pretty sweet amenities like a Nespresso coffee maker, a Bose iPod dock, Kiehl’s toiletries, and a minibar stocked with complimentary bottled water, juice and soda. WiFi is free and available throughout the hotel and, in case you left all your electronic devices at home, you can borrow a laptop from the reception desk.
For a small hotel, the New Majestic has plenty of facilities including a small fitness centre and swimming pool. Both are located on the second floor and feel quite private; just remember there are port holes in the pool floor that allow diners at the Majestic Restaurant to peek up at you!
All room rates include breakfast here, the hotel’s only restaurant, and it’s a hearty meal with eggs cooked to order, cereal, pastries, fresh fruit and even some Asian options like congee and dim sum. At any other mealtime, the Majestic’s food is as stylish as the rooms offering haute Chinese cuisine like Peking duck with foie gras.
With rooms starting at S$250 with breakfast (plus 10% service charge and 7% taxes) and going up to S$400, the New Majestic is actually very good value for central Singapore. The hotel occasionally offers promotions through its website and advance discounts of 10% are always available.
While creative types will be in heaven here, the location walking distance from Outram Park MRT also makes it a good option for business travellers tired of bland hotel rooms. The New Majestic didn’t strike us as a family hotel, but children are welcome with cribs provided for free or an extra bed for S$100 per night.
