Lofi Inn

A fine hostel choice

What we say: 3.5 stars

Hostels are a dime a dozen in Singapore’s Little India neighbourhood, but Lofi Inn sets itself apart with its ensuite dorm rooms and open-air common area — and it’s also great value.

Opened in 2012, Lofi Inn has a bright, cheerful style and modern amenities. A lift connects its four floors of rooms, common area and rooftop bar, making it one of the few Singapore hostels suitable for people with limited mobility.

There are 10 rooms in total, each with two or three bunkbeds, lockers and an attached bathroom with a hot shower. This clever set-up allows each room to function as either a small dorm room or a private room for a group or large family. Rooms are air-con and little things brighten up the place like paintings of flowers in the bathrooms. Rates may vary a little, but online rates are typically S$23 for a bed in an eight-bed dorm, S$27 for a room in a six-bed dorm, S$155 for a private room for four people and S$195 for a private room for six people. If you’re willing to take the risk, walk-in rates are lower from S$20 for a dorm bed.

The common area offers all the usual hostel facilities including a TV, big tables, washing machine and a kitchenette with a microwave and toaster. The open-air setting is great for enjoying Singapore’s sunny days, but also means that people smoke and hang their wet laundry here. After dark, the hostel’s top floor becomes Skive 43 Rooftop Bar which attracts a mix of travellers and locals with its laidback ambiance and boozy bargains like S$6 beers.

We also love Lofi Inn’s location which is minutes from Little India MRT and surrounded by cheap restaurants where you can try delicious South Indian food like masala dosa. The staff can hook you up with discounted tickets to top attractions like the Singapore Zoo and a bulletin board in the lobby has useful information like subway maps, taxi phone numbers and suggestions what to see and do.

Rates at Lofi Inn include a complimentary breakfast and internet access via the WiFi or guest computers. It’ll cost you an extra S$2 to rent a towel and locks for the lockers are not provided, so bring your own or buy one at reception.

In spite of the on-site bar and cheap rates, Lofi Inn hasn’t caught on with backpackers yet. Most of the guests staying here appear to be families or people in Singapore long-term. If you’re looking for a party atmosphere and social outings try the nearby Inn Crowd or Prince of Wales hostels instead.
