Woke Home Hostel

The original capsule hostel

What we say: 4 stars

Capsule-style hostels have become all the range in Singapore, but Woke Home in the Clarke Quay area is the original. It’s also the cheapest and the only one to provide a TV and headphones inside each capsule.

The idea behind a capsule hostel is to offer greater privacy than a traditional bunk bed. The capsules at Woke Home encourage you to be a complete hermit as they are enclosed on all sides but one which has a bamboo screen so you can get in and get out. Inside each capsule is a single bed as well as an electrical outlet, folding table, lamp and a 15” TV with headphones – basically everything you need to entertain yourself all night without disturbing your dorm-mates. The dorm rooms are air-con with a ventilation fan in each capsule so they don’t get stuffy.

Woke Home’s 88 capsule beds are spread out over the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the building, but thankfully there is an elevator. Guests are given a key card to access the dorms and, combined with the lockers in each room, security is excellent. There is one female-only room and the toilet/shower facilities on each level are segregated by gender.

In case you are feeling sociable, Woke Home has a good-sized common area with a sofa, TV, DVD player and guest computers. That said, there isn’t much of a party vibe and guests seem to keep to themselves. Woke Home’s other facilities include a kitchenette where you can prepare a light meal or help yourself to the complimentary 24-hour breakfast of cereal, toast, spreads and coffee or tea. Rates also include WiFi and use of their washer/dryer (they even provide the detergent).

Considering that other capsule hostels in Singapore charge up to S$55 per night, the prices are Woke Home are a bargain. The rack rates are S$42 for a bed in the mixed room or S$45 in the female-only room.

The location is also extremely convenient – a five-minute walk to the riverside entertainment area of Clarke Quay or 10 minutes to Chinatown or Raffles Place. Proof that it’s the perfect location for a hostel, the same building is home to popular Five Stones Hostel, a traditional hostel with bunk beds and private rooms.
