The Strand is the grand old dame of Bencoolen Street and the obvious advantage is that rooms are far bigger than the shoeboxes at some neighbouring hotels. The trade-off is some terribly gloomy decor, but if you can get beyond the superficial the rooms have comfy beds, a sitting area and excellent bathrooms. The Strand will especially appeal to big families who don't want to split up because you can keep adding extra beds to the huge family rooms — even seven people is no problem. Service is famously curt. Quoted prices include taxes, service charge and breakfast.
