New Road Guest House
Great budget option

What we say:
Hidden away on Charoen Krung Road at the river end of Surawong Road, the New Road Guesthouse has a stack of backpacker friendly rooms spread across two properties that represent excellent backpacker value for this end of town. The guesthouse boasts the cheapest dorms in Bangkok, and while you will find a cheaper dorm of Khao San Road, it wouldn't be a dorm we'd put our dog in, so if you're after the cheapest, habitable digs in Bangkok, head to the New Road Guesthouse. Put together with travellers in mind, there's lots of common area, two bars (including one on the roof) and a lot of quite interesting tour services. All this comes together well to create a comfortable and social atmosphere — ideal for single travellers looking to meet up with others. The double rooms with a private bathroom don't offer quite as good value. They are by no means the worst out there , but they feel expensive when you consider the tiny bathroom and hard mattresses. While it lacks the shine of the new classy hostels popping up across Silom, New Road closes the deal on a fun and sociable backpacker hangout. Very friendly, good fun staff and free WiFi. Recommended.

Overpriced and Bed Bugs
Disappointed: we paid 650B for double with fan. Tiny, very basic room, tiny bathroom and even the bed was small for a double, stained bedding, cockroaches. And to top it all got bitten by bedbugs. Many young Scandinavian travellers and families were staying there; doubt their rooms were as bad, or else they were paying a lot more. Over-hyped, and unless staying in dorms certainly not a budget option in Bangkok.

Bad experience
Mind that they are undertaking major reconstruction of some rooms so it is dirty everywhere and they were drilling in the room next door from 8am! Looks to me like this will be going for a long time... Miniature room with dirty walls with fan for 500B didn't feel like a good deal either. Places near Siam Square have a much better location and at other places e.g. White Lodge, you get a much higher standard for the same money. The only reason to stay here might be the good storage service. Free WiFi is nice too but haven't came across such a slow connection anywhere else in Thailand.

Cheap and convenient
Paid 500B for a single room with private bathroom. It was clean, quiet and in a good location. Staff were most helpful.
