Saphai Pae Hostel
Flash bunks in the business district

What we say:
Opened in 2010 in a building formerly occupied by gemstone dealers, Saphai Pae is a flash, funky and spotless hostel in a low-key location.
Although there's not much going on right around the hostel, it's a five-minute walk to Surasak BTS station, which is only one stop away from the Chao Phraya River, and a 10-minute stroll to the nightlife and dining of Silom Road.
You won't need to go out if unless you want to, however, as Saphai Pae is quite self-sufficient. A bright, big and shiny lounge area on the ground floor boasts several communal computers, a pool table, couches, a bar and restaurant. The building also features coin-op laundry facilities and free WiFi throughout. Dorms come in a few different sizes but all beds offer adequate space, individual reading lamps and plus-size lockers. Modern shared bathrooms are spotless and spacious. Basic private rooms with shared bath or more swish rooms upstairs with en suite bathrooms, flatscreen TVs, fridges and safes are also available if you want some privacy.
The hostel's theme throughout is a sort of urban funk style with bright yellows clashing with black and silver, polished concrete floors and murals of urban landscapes that look like the cover of a hip hop album. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and they told us to check the hostel's website first as promotions can often save you money.
