River View Guest House
Not exactly cheap, but still a budget option to ge

What we say:
This eight-storey guesthouse wins the prize for being Bangkok's trickiest place to find despite being easy to see from the river. The views from the restaurant are superb; while the food is pretty standard guesthouse fare, it's a great place to relax with a beer. A renovation of all of the rooms and the restaurant was almost completed when Travelfish visited, bringing the value-for-money ratio back into the positive range. The top three floors of rooms are the best, with tasteful decoration and lovely balconies overlooking the river. River View is in a good location if you plan spending a lot of time in Chinatown or if you're keen on a river view without paying five-star prices but it's pretty out of the way otherwise. The rooms with balconies are pretty amazing, but it's debateable if the other rooms are really a good value. Still, it's peaceful. To get there, hop off at River City ferry pier — otherwise known as the Harbor/Marine Department, turn left and follow the small soi that runs off through markets. Keep going till you enter an area full of used car parts, take the third little soi on your left which has a sign pointing to the guesthouse — the sign is actually facing the opposite direction so look backwards as you pass the soi to spot it. Follow this, take a turn to the right and you're there. Alternatively, get off the MRT at Hua Lamphong and take a motorbike for around 20 baht.

just perfect
I stayed here for a few days and now in december i'm still impressed. In Fact, first time in thailand i felt me welcome and good supported here. Only the service in the restaurant is a kind of slow. For sure not the last time here.

to much money for just the river
I stayed here for a week and the first days was ok but it then it realy got on my nerves that the taxis could never find the place and the streets were full of water all morning and afternoon (in wet-season anyway). The rooms are big but a bit old and the air-con has seen better days. The service at the top floor restaurant is very slow.

Awesome location
I stayed here for a total of 8 nights in 2001. For exploring Chinatown, the river and even Silom Road (if you don't mind the hike), this is the place to be. The food was good although it sometimes took a while, the prices were right, the views outstanding from the 8th floor restaurant-bar and the staff were very accommodating. We left quite a bit of booty from our shopping trips while we spent three weeks in Vietnam, recalled it didn't cost much and everything was intact when we came back. The hotel is clean and things are a bit threadbare in spots but overall, a good value for the location alone -- plus the fact that the front desk was always very helpful. To get around town we always took advantage of the riverboats by using the harbour department dock a few blocks from the hotel. If you want to stay in a neighbourhood where you will see real daily life this is the place, very few tourists wander the streets and you feel safe at all times. The local vendors are quick to recognize you after one or two visits and we enjoyed getting lessons in Thai from them as we ate or purchased from them. Good cheap street food is to be had on every corner and again you won't find many tourists or the touts that go with. Our favourite evenings were spent drinking beer Changs from the balcony of the bar and watching the evening traffic on the river. I have not stayed with a family there yet so I cannot comment on that but for couples or singles it is a nice place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Khao San Road or Sukhumvit Road.

More on the great views
If you don't fancy the stratospheric prices at the bars of the nearby Penisular, Oriental and Sheraton hotels. The River View is a great spot to watch the fireworks that pepper the sky over Chinatown during every major celebration. These are fairly regular - His Majesty's birthday, Songkran, New Year and, of course, Chinese New Year.

Awesome
I like this place a lot and have stayed there many times. The view, as you say is fantastic - easily best in town, but I thought the food was also very good.
