Description
The mid-range Royal on the corner of Ratchadamnoen Avenue and opposite Sanam Luang is in a top location for tourists and the hotel remains very popular with organised groups. The hotel features two wings, varying both in age and quality. The newer wing is slightly more expensive but includes ABF. Some of the rooms are quite good fare, but others are run-down cells that cannot be recommended. Ask to see a few rooms to be sure. For the money the hotel is overpriced -- especially when compared to the newer cookie-cutter hotels around Khao San Rd, but the Royal does have a certain quirky charm to it. Dodgy tuk-tuk and taxi drivers congregate out front -- don't believe a word they say -- about anything.

Total rooms: 300

A bit of Royal history -
By mangoboy ( total comments: 11  More information please ) Stayed here 10/2002
During the 1993 popular uprising against one of Thailand's many would be despots, Khun Sujinda, thousands of protesters lost their lives on Ratchadamneon Avenue to the guns of the junta's militia. Thailand's Tianaman Square. The bodies of the dead were stacked in the lobby of The Royal during the skirmish. Macabre? Yes. A reminder nonetheless that Thailand hasn't always been the paradise found that all those brochures would have us believe.

The Royal is also know in Thai as Hotel Rattanakosin. This is what is stated in neon Thai script atop its marquee. Useful to know if your cabbie is one of the many who couldn't find his backside with a sketchmap and a rearview mirror.
