Baan Sabai
Good overflow spot

What we say:
Baan Sabai is set towards the far end of the Rambutri loop and makes for a good overflow option if you're struggling to find a room. We found the staff to be particularly friendly and helpful, and the rooms, while no great shakes, are clean and well maintained. We were only above to see a fan room with a window and share bathroom, which we doubt is their best room, but it was clean, and, well, had a window. For the money, this particular room probably isn't the best value on the block, but their other rooms, expecially the air-con options, are probably better value. Even if you don't stay here, the shady bar area is a good place to spend a lazy afternoon writing in the journal or playing cards as the atmosphere is pretty chilled.

Clean and quiet for the most part
I stayed at Baan Sabai for about 6 nights in January and had no major problems. Since the single rooms had no windows and I have a serious demand for sunlight and some fresh air, I chose the double. That was 350B. I was in a twin bed room, with 2 windows. Besides the bed I got a fan and a nightstand. The whole thing was very clean: sheets, floor, walls and the bed was quite good (due to timezone change I slept for several several hours for 2 days). The inconvenient was the bar just across the street where they played the same music every single night, specially bob marley hits. If you sleep easily it's ok, otherwise use earplugs. Bathroom were mostly clean, exception to one night when someone vomited on the toilet and forgot to flush. Only ate once at the restaurant, breakfast I think, it's food, but you can get a lot nicer for a lot cheaper elsewhere. As for the receptionists, they were allright, not the friendliest but ok. I have japanese looks and that didn't cause me any trouble either, but I maybe the guys at the desk have changed. I cant say the same for the lady who works at the internet/travel agency place just downstairs. I saw her being very rude to lots of people coming and when she was on the phone chatting - quite often - she wouldn't even look at you. Prices a bit higher also. Even though I got a room the first time with no reservation, I do advise to make one and confirm it if you are sure you want this place, I saw a girl who lots hers even after calling to confirm it and when I came back to Bangkok after 2 weeks travelling around they were full (like almost all the other places around). They did however let me keep my luggage there for the day after asking for it 2 or 3 times.

Sparsely Spartan with a Warrior-like Receptionists
Forgive my analogy but I couldn't think of a better description. PROs: Most backpackers who have stayed here can and will attest to how******and span the rooms are (Ours was a private room with A/C and 2 twin beds). Passing through the halls you would notice how clean everything is. No molds or anything. I was able to take a quick peek at the public restrooms and they are clean as well. All for a fairly acceptable price! CONs: My one and only complaint is the Customer Service(or lack thereof) of this male guy at the reception. The place has formed its own policy of ''No visitors/No guests'' (Don't quote me on this) as I was stopped from entering the entrance to the rooms by the aforementioned guy @ the front-desk. He kept telling me in a non-low key voice, ''No Asians! No Asians!'' I think he meant to say, no hookers. Well I am the former (Asian) and not the latter (hooker) specifically from the Philippines. I had just arrived from my country at a late hour and had met my European significant other, who had checked-in earlier in the week. I will not go on on how sensible (or not) this policy is, assuming that they have had previous experiences that had led to that policy. My only qualm about it is the manner in which this person had enforced this rule. He reprimanded us in a very offensive and impolite way in front of other guests. 5-star or not, this should NOT be the way in which ANY guest or visitor should go through regardless of his/her race or economic background. He made me feel very unwelcome there, and if not for the ungodly hour it had been that time, I would've just turned my back and went my way. Of course I have my travel blog and this site to warn other ''Asians'' of the potential treatment that they would get. Suffice to say, I would not recommend this to my many backpacker friends.

Sterile...
I stayed twice in my 2 month trip, the place was spotless, very basic but super super clean. First time we had a fan room, which just got way way to hot as the windows did not fully open, and second time we went for air con, which was alot more pleasant! the guys were very helpful to us, answering all our questions and even warning us about the train strike on the northern line to CM, showing us his newspaper for proof! will defiantly stay again.

Danger--Receptionist At Baan Sabai
Let me make one thing clear from the beginning... I have never stayed here but I had friends that did. I have eaten breakfast or coffee there several times and the restaurant staff while unsmiling did provide good service and better than average food. The other day I made the mistake of trying to visit a friend and walked past the tall thin daytime receptionist. He followed me and said the only kind thing during this whole episode, ''Excuse me, this is private. You must leave. I was about to state my mission but as I was walking out he pushed my shoulder from behind and as I turned around, he got inches from my face and said, ''You want to fight? Before I could respond he kicked my kidneys and he and a coworker threw me on the ground outside the lobby. Pretty sore, I walked to tourist police station nearby and a policeman accompanied me to the guesthouse and he was told to go to the police station. He told police that I started the fight. He then started bragging that the owner was his relative. I answered that that was why maybe he felt he could get away with anything. As this was happening, I started thinking that perhaps this could go very bad with me being the one under arrest instead of him. (After all, this is Thailand.) So, I changed my mind and told police that I only wanted an apology, which the man did... twice before leaving. The sergeant told me afterwards that he would have arrested the receptionist but that I had probably made the right decision since I would not be allowed to leave the country until his court case was heard. My visa would have expired... not to mention my plane ticket. I come to Thailand often and 6 months ago, I witnessed this same receptionist screaming at the top of his lungs at this meek old couple for politely complaining about their room. There are many rooms in this same condition within 200m of here that offer rooms for 100 to 150B cheaper. For your safety and enjoyment I would consider the many other offerings!

Very basic
Baan Sabai is definitely a very quiet, clean place to stay with very friendly staff, but the rooms are extremely basic for the money that you pay.

Clean with great outdoor area
For the price this is great accommodation! You are only ever going to get something basic for 170B a night but it is very clean - they are constantly cleaning the share bathrooms - the people are really friendly and the outdoor area is great. A nice spot close to everything but still far enough away to be able to get away from it all when you want some peace. I will definitely stay here again.

Pay extra for windows!
We stayed here 1 night and got one of the cheapest rooms, with fan and share bathroom which was great! Except we also opted for no window, which was a mistake, as there was an air-vent facing the hallway and we were kept up all night with people arriving and leaving! Other than that, it was very clean and great.

Yes, a good place
Agree with previous comments. Good place, basic, clean and quiet with all the action on the street outside. Nice orchid garden and helpful staff. You can have a decent breakfast in the restaurant.

Clean, basic, but cosy feel
The rooms are clean and basic and bathrooms clean too. Great shower with lots of power. The bar area is lovely and staff genuinely smiley. Really soft beds and pillows, nice and comfy and quiet at night. All in all worth staying.

Clean and Quiet
The Travelfish description is accurate. Ban Sabai is a decent place, with a feeling of being a bit off the busiest part of Banglamphu. They also have air-con rooms for 500B.
