Description
This place is reasonably priced and has good, pretty clean rooms with friendly staff, though some of the rooms and bathrooms are a bit grotty and musty. Rooms with windows provide extra light, ventilation, and modest views, and are worth the extra baht. This has the same owner as the New Siam II and New Siam Riverside, which are far better spots, but are more expensive. In high season, this is very popular and often full so book ahead.

Total rooms: 90

Sgl fan share b'room
240 THB (low season) 280 THB (high season)

Dbl fan share b'room
340 THB (low season) 360 THB (high season)

Dbl fan private b'room
450 THB (low season) 520 THB (high season)

Dbl A/C private b'room
590 THB (low season) 620 THB (high season)

Probably best to go elsewhere -

Room was very dark and musty. Bathroom quite mouldy. A/C really is noisy. Not very secure. Loo roll is extra (!!) Staff are a little abrupt.

Avoid the shared bathrooms - they are very open and not very many of them.

Give it wide berth -

Door didn't close, let alone lock. Had to move the bed in front of the door at night. Air-con sounded like a 747 at take off. The rudest most unhelpful staff I have ever come across in years of backpacking.

Friendly staff, good atmosphere, clean and comfortable rooms -

We were first heading for New Siam II, but were tired from the trip and couldn't find it, so we decided to stay here.
We were glad we did! We looked at New Siam II the next day, and it was too luxurious for our taste. The swimmingpool is at the front of it, and is almost on the street. Not much privacy!
Anyway, New Siam I was very nice, we paid 550 BHT for a double room with aircon/hotwater. Also the rooms have a locker but bring your own padlock. The food was also tasty. The Wild Orchid guesthouse accros the street might be a little better, but the price is also much higher. A Singha beer costs 35 BTH at New Siam, Wild Orchid asks 60 BTH for one. The street New Siam I is on is perfect - nice guesthouses, good atmosphere. It seems like this street is what Khao San Road was 10 years ago. Recommended!!

clean but not really nice -

This place is OK (clean, room with window), but not really pleasant to stay (too gloomy!).
a double room with fan and private bathroom (hot water) cost 490 baths.

Rambuttri Village Inn
95 Soi Rambutri, Bangkok
This mid-sized hotel has very clean and well-maintained rooms, making it a good choice for this price range in the Banglamphu area. Set at the rear of a small shopping village, there is a pleasant pool and a few places to eat, but someone really needs to chase the irritating tailors away! Rambuttri... more

Wild Orchid Villa
8 Soi Chana Songkhram
Wild Orchid Villa has very good air-con doubles worth the slightly higher prices. This is a very popular guesthouse and is often full -- luckily a few other new places have opened nearby. The terrace restaurant is also quite good value. On the downside, this guesthouse has a very hostile anti-Thai... more

Lamphu House
75-77 Rambuttri Rd, Bangkok
Lamphu House opened in early 2005 and had spotless rooms with equally clean bathrooms in a multi-storey building. There is a spacious and quiet garden area out front with some comfortable furniture to relax in. The staff are very friendly and English-speaking -- if they maintained the rooms well... more

Bella Bella House
74 Soi Chana Songkhram
Bella Bella doesn't have the most exciting rooms in town, but they are very clean and well looked after. The bathrooms are particularly spotless. There are five floors of rooms but no elevator, so opt for a lower floor if you are unfit, but take the higher floors if you want a breeze and a view of... more

Baan Sabai
12 Soi Rongmai, Bangkok
Baan Sabai features a good restaurant and bar area. The rooms are plain with no furnishings other than beds in most rooms. The shared bathroom and toilet facilities are very clean. It's reasonably priced for the area, but not the best value. Even if you don't stay here, the shady bar area is a good... more

New My House Guest House
37 Soi Chanasongkhram, Bangkok
This place has clean rooms at reasonable prices and is centrally located on Rambutri Road. New My House Guest House features a great sitting area downstairs with Thai cushions and a large TV screen for their popular nightly movies. Staff is a bit indifferent to guests, but the rooms are clean,... more

Apple 2 Guest House
11 Soi Trok Kai Chaee off Phra Sumen Rd, Bangkok
This tucked away spot has reasonable rooms for their price all stuck in a little wooden house. Ordering food and eating in the downstairs of the house feels like eating in someone's home, which is basically what you are doing; the homey atmosphere is a nice change in comparison to some of the big... more

New Merry V Guest House
18-20 Phra Athit Road
New Merry V is spotlessly clean, right down to its share bathrooms. It's also very conveniently located for the Chao Phraya River Express ferries and for the strip of excellent bars and restaurants on Phra Athit Rd. There are 14 different styles of rooms to select from in the older front building... more

Peachy Guest House
10 Phra Athit Road
Peachy is a good budget choice and is well-located near Khao San Rd and the Chao Phraya River Express ferries. The enormous guesthouse was a boarding school many decades ago and still has the feeling of such. Beautiful hardwood floors are a plus, mattresses from decades ago a minus. Moonshine Bar... more

Sawasdee Krungthep Inn
30 Soi Rongmai off Soi Rambutri
Another of the Sawasdee chain of hotels and guesthouses, all the rooms here have private bathroom and cable TV. Standard rooms are mouldy smelling and have tiny, yet clean baths (the sink is actually in the bedroom!) Superior rooms have slat windows that provide a little extra air, newer... more

Thara House
100-100/1 Phra Athit Rd
The former Four Sons House (which moved a few doors down) now advertises itself as Comfortable and Friendly. Well, it doesn't appear uncomfortable or unfriendly, but seems to be a relatively non-descript budget hotel. Although it's under new management, a fresh coat of cream paint and peach trim... more

Four Sons Village
54/1 Soi Chanasongkhram
This used to be Chart Guesthouse but has rebranded under the Four Sons brand. The rooms are ok size and many of the rooms have large TVs hanging off the ceiling above the foot of the bed -- be careful not to whack your head. There are two choices of rooms -- the cheaper ones at the rear or the ones... more

Merry V Guest House
33 Chana Songkram, Bangkok
This very popular place represents quite good value, with basic but clean rooms with share bathrooms and larger rooms with air-con and private bathrooms. Just around the corner from the bend on Rambutri, it has an ideal location for those who want a social atmosphere, but still be on a quiet soi.... more

K.C. Guest House
64 Trok Kai Chae, Phra Sumen Rd, Bangkok
K.C. has good clean rooms that are surprisingly quiet given the racket that goes on just outside. They're a bit aging, with clean but slightly worn bedding, but large windows brighten what would otherwise be depressingly boring, undecorated hotel rooms. Standard Thai and western food is available... more

Happy House
46 Soi Chana Songkhram, Phra Athit Rd, Banglamphu
One of the newer backpacker lodges on Soi Chanasongkhram, Happy House is between Wild Orchid Villa and Phra Athit Rd and has stock standard small concrete rooms with clean bathrooms and reasonable beds. The linen was clean when we checked but this place is very new. Downstairs there is a popular... more
