Wild Orchid Villa

Popular but rude staff

Wild Orchid Villa has very good air-con doubles worth the slightly higher prices. This is a very popular guesthouse and is often full -- luckily a few other new places have opened nearby. The terrace restaurant is also quite good value. On the downside, this guesthouse has a very hostile anti-Thai policy that extends to other Asians who look Thai. Staff seem to tolerate foreigners but there are many other guesthouses with far superior service.

Addition to the previous ... - 26th January, 2007
The noise mentioned below came from kitchen and restaurant staff, not guests. Also, take note of the sign posted at reception ... ''NO THAI PEOPLE ALLOWED''. Very nice.

Nice room, but that's about it. - 26th January, 2007
We rented a suite (850B) for my friend's last night in Thailand. The room and attached bathroom were great, and the bed was the most comfortable one we'd slept in during our trip. On the downside, staff were indifferent and sullen, drinks in the restaurant area were ridiculously expensive, and there was a lot of noise in the evening from the restaurant and kitchen staff that easily reached our floor. The owner of this place also owns Sawasdee Guest House and one of the larger bars on Khao San Road. He's just built a god-awful concrete monstrosity on a gorgeous stretch of beach on Ko Chang. At the prices this place charges, I'm sure he'll have no trouble building another. Also, take note of the sign posted at reception ... "No Thai people allowed". Very nice.

Poor Value - 30th November, 2009
I found this place overpriced for what it offered. We paid 950 baht a night for a double room with aircon. The room itself was clean enough, but noisy at night and there just wasn't anything to justify paying that amount, even in bangkok. The restaurant downstairs served very typical tourist food at inflated prices so we didn't eat there often. Oh and it was almost full when we arrived, the reason being: several tour groups use it as their accommodation in Bangkok. In the end we switched to staying at rambuttri village which was cheaper, cleaner, and they have a swimming pool! http://www.travelfish.org//accommodation_profile/thailand/bangkok_and_surrounds/bangkok/khao_san_road/all/846

A pleasant stay - 8th September, 2009
This guesthouse looks nice from the outside, an open restaurant with colorfull lanterns. We stayed in a simple, clean room with A/C, located on the outside (the also have inner rooms without daylight) for THB 700. The staff is friendly and respond to emails. They even held our room if we would arrive before 11pm. The food is nice but not special. If you don't need too much luxury, this place is just fine.

Going Downhill? - 22nd September, 2007
I enjoyed my stay in July 04(?) but in my next stay the noise level had gone up and the service down (that ''I can't be bothered to stop my conversation to check you in'' type). I guess it's size makes it popular with group bookings. Got woken up about 3am by what sounded like 15-20 people arriving after a late flight. The restaurant is nice, but the food is mediocre and over-priced.

Great stay...an oasis for me! - 15th September, 2007
I arrived in Bangkok at 1:30 am after 32 hours of travel comfortable to have made reservations. I arrive at my hotel and it was closed. I rang the bell, knocked on the door etc. So much for the comfort of reservation (made through this site). That happens. I found a dump for one night (actually, about 5 hours. The next day, I wandered toward the river and stumbled upon a great looking restaurant. While eating, a woman I'd met at the airport came walking down the stairs. I hadn't realized this was a hotel as well. I moved here immediately and had a great experience. I spent the last two nights of my trip here after wandering about Thailand and would definitely go back. Restaurant/lounge is a great place to hang and meet friends. I took an airconditioned room, nice large bed, space, and cool having the bathroom on the balcony.

Nice Enough - 19th August, 2007
We stayed in an aircon room which was very comfortable, clean & a good size. The bathroom was on the balcony which was very novel. The staff were helpful and conveniently reception was 24 hours, great location and a vibrant atmosphere. Need earplugs to get a good night sleep from the general noise of central Bangkok (if you're a poor sleeper). The small amount of food we had there was average so we ate out at other places alot but the restaurant is nice to relax and have a quiet drink in the evening.

A pricey but comfortable option - 14th December, 2006
Wild Orchid is one of the more pricey guesthouses in the Khao San area. We had a double with air-con, attached bathroom with cold shower and balcony overlooking the street. The room was very nice, completely different from the so often very spotless options in the area. The price was 700B, which is quite expensive but you get a really good room for your money. The restaurant is very busy throughout the day. The attached travel agency offers a lot of services with all of the pros and cons of the agencies in and around Khao San Road. Avoid bookings long-distance buses here -- the prices are a rip off and the quality bad. As a guesthouse and restaurant Wild Orchid is a good choice.

It's okay - 12th August, 2005
Wild Orchid is a great place to meet people and do nothing at their lobby, however the food is expensive -- go to another guesthouse to eat. There's a waiter who works at night usually, he is one cool dude who got us away from the boss because we brought beer from 7-eleven! Anyway, he works straight after Uni and don't get much sleep! So, cheer him if you saw him! Make sure he stays in his job! :p The cleaners are nice too, you can forget buying detergent -- ask them and you've got DIY laundry! I stayed in a single room it had just a warm orangey light and I had to get out of the room asap. The windows are see-through, so I attached the bed-sheet with duct-tape for a bit more privacy. The shared bathrooms are clean enough.

acceptable - 27th March, 2005
The aircon here is weak and the bathroom has wooden blinds that don't shut -- not much good for keeping out the noise. Lighting is poor too. Besides those points, Wild Orchid is in a good location and is nicely decorated. No Thais are allowed in the rooms upstairs.
