Wendy House

Convenient and affordable

What we say: 4 stars

Set in a convenient spot near a Skytrain station and canal boat pier, Wendy House blurs the line between old-style backpacker guesthouse and flashpacker-range bed and breakfast. No matter how you define it, the 38-room property has an intimate atmosphere and a welcoming staff offering a bunch of helpful info on exploring Bangkok.

Plenty of tuk tuks around here.

Rooms are available in two separate buildings, the better-equipped “standard” editions accessed by steep tile stairs above reception. Equipped with double beds, TVs, mini-fridges, kettles, air-con, small hot-water bathrooms and one small window facing either the alley or an adjacent building, the standards are rather dark and cramped, but also well kept and quiet.

Cheaper than the standards, “economy” rooms are situated just across a narrow alley in the smaller building, which has a more cheerful feel thanks to larger windows, hardwood stairs and parquet floors in the rooms. A few different sizes can accommodate one to four guests, making this an affordable option for families as well as couples and solo travellers.

An aptly named economy room.

An aptly named economy room.

Economy rooms lack TVs and fridges but do come with air-con, kettles and hot water in the private bathrooms. The double economy appeared to be no smaller than the pricier standard in the main building. At time of writing, the economy rooms were not listed on the hotel’s website. Wendy’s rooms would be overpriced if they were around Khao San Road, but in the Siam Square area they represent very reasonable value.

While rooms will get the job done for a quiet night’s sleep, the Wendy’s common facilities and service are what make it stand out. A buffet breakfast comes complimentary, served in a charming ground floor cafe. You’ll also find a number of travel guides and other books for loan along with shared computers, free newspapers and excellent Nancy Chandler Bangkok maps on the walls.

If you’re after a quiet place to get some reading or writing done, grab a table in the second building’s bright common room. WiFi is free and there’s also a large laundry room on site. Known for their willingness to help travellers make the most of their time in Bangkok, the all-female staff speak good English and have positive attitudes.

Wendy House is located on Soi Kasem San 1, a quiet lane that loops behind Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Jim Thompson’s House, Baan Krua Nua silk village, MBK and a bunch of other malls and street markets are all within walking distance. Khao San Road and the Rattanakosin historic district are reachable by taxi or the San Saeb khlong boat from the nearby Hua Chang pier. National Stadium BTS station is also right around the corner.

If the Wendy is full, nearby A-One House and White Lodge are lesser-quality guesthouses where you’ll probably find an affordable room if you’re in a jam. Otherwise, try Lemonseed Rooms off Petchaburi Road, or pay a bit more for the neighbouring Reno Hotel and its swimming pool.
