Lemonseed Rooms

Simple, friendly, yellow

What we say: 4 stars

Down a sidestreet and a stone’s throw from some of central Bangkok’s best shopping, Lemonseed Rooms reminds us of a small town guesthouse. With a relaxed atmosphere, great service and spacious rooms that represent excellent value, there’s nothing sour about Lemonseed.

Plain, simple, yellow.

Plain, simple, yellow.

In a city with no shortage of flophouses that call themselves “boutiques” and serviced apartments claiming to be “mansions”, the fact that Lemonseed files itself simply under “rooms” is a breath of fresh air. This non-pretentious sentiment is mirrored by the friendly Thai-British couple who owns the place. While a handful of artistic touches are found throughout the building, it’s the rooms that are the focus.

All 20 rooms are massive by Bangkok standards — if you need serious space to store those wholesale purchases from Pratunam, this is your place. Though minimalist in a “what you see is what you get” sort of way, the decor possesses a certain charm. Polished concrete floors are brightened by yellow-orange walls, a single framed photo of lemons on the vine, soft lighting and a large window to let in natural light. King-size beds are comfy, cleanliness is well looked after and all floors are accessed by a lift. Coupled with the building’s thick walls, the leafy Soi Petchaburi 11 locale ensures a quiet night’s sleep.

In a cramped city like Bangkok, the spaciousness is welcome.

In a cramped city like Bangkok, the spaciousness is welcome.

Each room comes with air-con, TV, fridge with free drinking water, key-card access, large mirror, small table and wide hot water bathroom with modern appliances. In addition to regular removable shower heads, rain showers are a thoughtful touch. Some rooms have attached balconies overlooking the street. While rooms don’t have safes, the owners offer free use of what we were told is a huge one down in reception. WiFi is free and Thai or Western breakfasts are served complimentary in an inviting ground-floor dining area.

All rooms go for 1,100 baht per night. Given room size, amenities, location and service, this is quite the bargain.

The fish is thinking,

The fish is thinking, “Good thing that cat is always distracted by the bird.”

A clutch of street food, restaurants, bars and the shopping of Pratunam are all within walking distance, but Lemonseed is also an ideal base for exploring the city. Just around the corner is Ratchathewi BTS skytrain station, from where you can take the Sukhumvit line north one stop to an interchange with the airport link, two stops to Victory Monument and an easy six stops to Chatuchak, Or Tor Kor and Morchit bus terminal. Home to the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, an interchange to the Silom sky train line and a bunch more shopping, Siam Square is just one stop to the south. Sukhumvit is also easily reached by sky train, and even Khao San Road is a manageable 80 baht taxi fare away.

We were told that Lemonseed attracts a varied mix of backpackers, flashpackers, families, small business-owners taking advantage of the area’s wholesale shopping and even long-term stayers. Advanced bookings are recommended as the place is often full — and it’s easy to see why. Comfort, functionality, a central location, great value and some very pleasant vibes combine to make Lemonseed a winner.
