Golden Palace Hotel

A great throwback to Bangkok's 1960s

No pic at the moment -- Sorry!

What we say: 3.5 stars

Just walking down the driveway to this motel-style building makes you check your head to ensure you haven't forgotten your fedora. Grab onto your low ball glass, and tinkle that ice, because it's still 1961 at the Golden Palace Hotel. A swimming pool sits in the middle of the bamboo-shaded courtyard with lounge chairs around it. A Thai restaurant and internet café are also on the grounds, serving as reminders that it's the new century and you're not in Scottsdale, Arizona. All the rooms are large and very clean, but the superior rooms are preferable to the standard ones if simply because the period furniture has been better maintained, allowing the fantasy to continue. Mattresses are a bit soft in both classes of rooms, but linens are clean, and all rooms have a safe, a refrigerator, and cable TV. This is a fun place, but better deals can be found elsewhere with more modern rooms (although not with a swimming pool).
