This institution opened in 1952, and not a skerrick appears to have changed since then. It's still a bit of a shame as the foyer promises mystery and charm but the rooms themselves are dreary. As it is, the Atlanta is often full, with people seduced by the foyer, quirky pool and eclectic notices around the place posted by founder Dr Max Henn. The rooms are rundown and every mattress in the place should be burned, but still, the crowds come. The food in the restaurant is outstanding, with the decor 50s style and some of the 60s grime still around. Nevertheless we like it a lot - just don't expect too much. Not a bad family option if you're not panicked by a bit of dirt. The Atlanta is located at the very end of the soi. When you reach the church it's the abandoned-looking building on your right. It's the quietest soi in the neighbourhood, but borders the freeway, so front facing rooms are a bit quieter. Their strict anti-sex tourist policy extends to those who look like sex-workers, so travellers with Thai boy/girlfriends take note.

Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. Quality of food exaggerated - 4th February, 2009
The Atlanta is a bit in the middle of nowhere; its location would be perfect for sex-tourists as it is close to nana but for backpackers there is not even a foodstall or a mom-and-pop shop somewhere around. The lobby looks nice; the restaurant is merely mediocre; food is only nicely advertised but not nicely done. The staff clearly has an attitude but a tip certainly cheers them up. Rooms are bleak, the whole building wobbles when a train passes by and the noise from the highway directly behind the pool can be mind wrecking. Reservations often get lost or are ignored. And when will they ever repair that dirty swimming pool with its broken tiles...

Come for the food and ambience - 14th January, 2009
Staying at the Altanta is an experience in itself. It doesn't have the best location (20 minute walk to Siam Square) and the rooms are blah, but the lobby, gardens, pool and restaurant make up for it. I wouldn't recommend this place to mid range or flashpackers, just budget travelers who don't mind a bit of grunge. Even if you don't stay here, check out the restaurant, ask for the full menu, and then spend an hour in the lobby reading the manuals, looking at the photo exhibitions and checking out the animals in the jungle gardens out back. Even though the rooms are basic, I'd stay here again just for the ambiance.

Used to like it - 6th December, 2007
I've stayed here several times over the past decade. While they have celaned it up a bit, the staff has gone downhill. They were very close to being full when we showed up. We had called in advance and had a Thai speaking friend make reservations. Despite this they didn't honor our reservation, the only room they had was half a suite (someone else was already in one of the rooms) they wanted the whole full price for the other room. It was a real shame as my girlfriend had never stayed here and didn't get the opportunity to have the Atlanta experience.

Loved it - 17th March, 2009
Quirky sanctuary for 1st time visitor to Bangkok. Room was tired as many reviews have said but lockable strongbox was good to have and room was spacious. We loved the restaurant and ate their nearly every day of our 7 day stay in Bangkok. The pool was a real plus. Location was fine for our needs but we'll proabably stay in Banglamphu to do the touristy visits when we return in April. Loved the unapologetic staunchness of the place.

Cold reception - 3rd January, 2009
- staff mostly cold and unfriendly (except for the young feller on night shift, i forget his name).
- internet not working when i was there
- i got 3rd floor room which (i think 1st and 2nd floors are better). more like a prison cell, but at least it had a balcony.
- bathroom was pretty ordinary.
- dined once for breakfast. food was ok.
- it's a fair walk down a dead end street from the Sukhumvit. especially with luggage.
- rooms have a safe but you need to purchase a lock.
- the building and surrounds (on premises) have charm but the Atlanta lacked atmosphere. It seemed too staid.
If you're looking for a similar budget hotel in same area but with a more relaxed environment (and better rooms and good pool) I suggest the Miami Hotel. It's closer to the Sukhumvit (Soi 13 i think).

We love this place, it's an oasis in the middle of Nana. It certainly has character. The de'cor is fab and the staff are friendly. Even though the rooms are pretty basic we will stay again. Purely because of the foyer and the feeling of going back in tme when you sit by the pool : ) The vegetarian food is excellent too.

Camp value - 17th November, 2004
The rooms are a bit dingy, but this place is hilarious. Signs all around the hotel actually tell you that complaints are not allowed, because you're lucky to stay here. You will remember this place for the rest of your life.
