What we say:

The Overstay is hard to conceptualize. It's a six story building, supposedly previously a whorehouse that was turned into a guesthouse/art space in 2009. On one hand it's a nice departure from the Khao San Rd tourist-money-machine, with residents pitching in to cook communally, paint, do some cleaning, start (and occasionally finish) art projects, and generally co-exist in a positive, creative atmosphere. On the other, like anything that has to do with community, it's really about the people participating. The people at The Overstay range from interesting, engaged travellers who like good music, dancing, fun times, and awesome conversation, to smoked up whack jobs that have lost the plot and use a hippie mentality as a cover for being cheap idiots. So really, it's luck of the draw but it might be worth chancing it — the rooms definitely won't break the bank, and you can crash for free if you're really cash-strapped (although it won't be comfortable). Plus, it's only a fifteen minute tuk tuk ride from Khao San Rd if hoboland turns pear shaped. Bar on the first floor, recording studio and dorms on the second, Hippie crash pad on the third, private singles and doubles on the fourth and fifth floors, and roof top chill out area on the sixth. All of the rooms are mattress-on-the-floor affairs with shared bathrooms. Bathroom cleanliness was acceptable to your reviewer, but other travellers had poorer reactions. Free Wifi.
