Sugar Cane Guest House 1
A reliable old standby

What we say:
Affiliated with Sugar Cane 2 further up river, Sugar Cane 1 offers a more central location and greater number of rafthouse rooms. The rooms on land are a little smaller than the bungalows at Sugar Cane 2 but are similarly simple and comfortable. There are several different varieties of raft room: some with fan, others with air-con, and the better rooms have an outside seating area. Rooms are large and have big, soft beds and relatively clean bathrooms, though we have received reports of bed bugs in the cheaper fan rooms. The raft rooms are starting to show their age and have a definite lived in feel. Rooms with decks have bamboo chairs and are great places to relax with a cold drink. Rafts are all interconnected and walls are thin, so noise can be an issue at night both from other guests and floating discos. WiFi is free and an inviting open-air restaurant serves standard backpacker fare, if you can pry the staff away from their TV.

Careful with your valuables
I had my towel stolen here. I left it outside to have it dry quickly and when I came back from dinner it was gone. It was a microfibre towel but still it's not worth more than 20 bucks!!! My mistake for leaving things outside... Anyway at night there is only a watchman and I found him twice sleeping (stayed three nights) and the keys are all in a basket. Therefore, take care of your valuables and use some locking system if you are leaving them in the room as they do not offer lockers. Another minor inconvenience is that the staff (as I've read above) prefer to watch television rather than attend customers...

Beware of bedbugs
DO NOT stay in this place. They have rooms for 150 baht but the walls are so thin you can hear any rustle (and amorous sounds) from the rooms on either side. They also have bed bugs everywhere. I was also asked several times by the staff about booking a tour, even after stating that I wasn't interested. Not a good place to stay.

Room worn out, great location for raft house
We stayed at Sugarcane 1 at the beginning of July at so called ''deluxe raft room'' no 17 (A/C, warm shower, private veranda). We stayed just 1 night, because we found the room a little worn out and the bathroom rather small and not traveler-friendly with practically no hooks to hang your stuff and towels and very dimly lit. However, you can hardly beat location of the raft house (especially rooms 17 and 20) as it is a great place to sip your evening beer on a private veranda, while watching the floating restaurants passing by (frequently with karaoke singers on board) and listening to sounds of nature further into evening. The price is not very high (THB 550), but in my opinion either they should invest in refurbishing of the room or stop calling it “deluxe”. I cannot say anything about other rooms or bungalows as we did not take a look at them. Other drawbacks: - both Sugarcane guesthouses had their mailboxes full and we were not able to contact them in advance, - there is a small Toi’s Tours stall at the guesthouse and their representative was a bit pushy in persuading us to book a particular tour with them. We moved to Pong Phen Guest House for the rest of our stay in Kanchanaburi.

Great Location and Good Value
Set in a fantastic location on the river Kwai this sweet little conglomeration of rafthouses is a great place to spend a few days. I should mention there is location on land also but really you should take the opportunity to stay in a raft house it is a good experience! The view out from the rafthouses accross the river Kwai is beautiful and I spent ages just looking out accross the waters either from the decking by the rafthouses or up in the stilted restaurant. I stayed in the 300 baht raft room. The facilities were pretty basic and the room did smell somewhat musty but I would expect this being set out on the river. It was a real novelty to sleep in a rafthouse one that I don't think I'll get to experience many times again! The restaurant was very good, with great views, friendly staff and good Thai food. The staff were happy for us to sit up here late into the evening even once they had gone without even paying our bill, instead they trusted us to settle in the morning - a refreshing attitude.

On 2nd Thought -- Beware of Bedbugs
About a week ago I posted a very positive review of Sugar Cane 1. After my stay I went up to Sangkhlaburi. Then, returning to Kanchanaburi, I again booked a room at Sugar Cane 1. It was on an older raft and wasn't as immediately pleasant as my former room, but it seemed just fine. Until, that is, I woke up at 1:30 in the morning itching madly from dozens of bedbug bites. I first tried sleeping on the floor, padding the bare wood with a towel. At about 3:00, wide awake, I gave up on that and went to the office to see if anyone was around to help me. There was only a night watchman, with very little English, but when I said ''Bedbugs'', and mimed scratching, he got it immediately (as if he'd seen this scene before). He followed me to my room and indicated I should pack up. I did. He then took me to the high-rise hotel just up the lane, talked to them, got a key and led me to a room. The room wasn't much -- fan on a stand and a toilet that didn't flush, but at least I could lie down for a couple of hours. At around 6:30 a.m., I went back to Sugar Cane to wait for the manager. She finally showed up at 7:05, 14 minutes before my train was to leave. I explained the situation. She showed zero chagrin and offered no apology. I asked for my money back. She said, no, I owed the other hotel 350 baht. I expressed amazement that, having rented me a room I couldn't sleep in for 550 baht, she now wanted me to pay 350 for a crappy fan room with a dysfunctional toilet. We went back and forth and she finally grudgingly gave me 200 baht -- the difference between her room price and the price at the other hotel. I sincerely hope that this review costs this place far, far more than 350 baht in lost business.

You Want Room R17 or R20
I looked at a 300 baht fan room and at a room (R20) with fan and a/c/. They told me I could have R20 with the a/c disabled for 400 or with a/c for 550. What the hell. I splurged. Rooms R17 and R20 are the two outermost rooms on the outermost raft. They've got windows on two sides, and neighbors on only one side. The views are quite splendid (R15 and R18 have the same window/quiet advantages, but they're on the shore end of the outermost raft). These more expensive rooms have their own semi-private verandas (separated from the neighbors by a lattice) with a couple of bamboo-framed chairs and a table. Cheaper rooms have a common sort-of-veranda, with no outside furniture provided. My room was exceptionally attractive, with woven mat walls, dark wood floors, a real bed (mattress and box springs) and an attractive three-shelved bamboo stand by the bed. C'mon. You came this far. Spend the $17 or so to have a quite wonderful room with a wonderful view.

Great Value
SugarCane was defintley one of the best value places I've stayed at in my travels. I opted for the 150B bungalow which was fine, spotlessly clean and comfortable. The restaurant is reasonable, but the staff seem reluctant to leave the TV all day and night. There's a guard at night which is reassuring and is a plesant escape from the mini-Khao Sanh Road nearby. All up, great place to stay while exploring Kanchanaburi and its surrounds.

Why not!
Good location, awesome sunsets. Got a bungalow on land for 250 Baht, clean and private. No tour pressures...great time had by all.

Great raft rooms, avoid the restaraunt
We stayed for about four days, very nice place right on the water. Room was clean with nice balcony and fresh towels every day. The view from the rooms is amazing but speedboats will wake you in the morning and floating restaurants will keep you up at night (if you try to get an early one that is). Food in the restaurant was a little overpriced and very bland, plus the staff throw you daggers when you walk in (they like to sit around and watch the TV), but it's close enough to loads of good restaurants that you never need use it. The ''please don't order'' vibe makes it not the kind of guesthouse you stick around and socialise in. Don't think we'd stay here again but then i imagine the boat noise comes with anywhere on the river.

love it always
I have stayed here about 7 times, and it is always great. The staff are excellent, very helpful and friendly. The river rooms are great and I love the surrounding waterlily view. It is relaxing. The tours are always very professional and well organised and a lot of fun. I can't say enought good things!

Play 'Find the Frogman'
I love this place. It has floating raft rooms that sit in a lotus lagoon formed by the slowing of the River Kwai as it meanders around the various intrusions on this part of the bank. Don't be surprised if, while you sip your Singha beer on your balcony enjoying the sunset behind the mountains west of the river, a chap wearing nothing but a pair of briefs and a diver's mask pops his head up out of the carpet of lotus pads brandishing a freshly caught fish on the end of a home-made harpoon. Quite the oddest thing, but evidently a daily occurrence here.
