Pong Phen Guesthouse
Lively spot with a pool

What we say:
Pong Phen has a variety of rooms in a friendly tropical atmosphere with crowds of happy travellers gathered around the bar and large swimming pool with river views. Basic air-con rooms in a motel-like building around the pool offer bamboo furniture and little else -- except a pool within two steps from your door. These are good options if hoping to meet other travellers as rooms are on top of each other and guests are always hanging by the pool. The newer rooms in a two-storey building opposite the restaurant offer lots of space to go with tile floors, small tables and chairs and modern bathrooms. Air-con rooms also have tiny TVs and the free WiFi seems to work reasonably well here. Colourful Thai-style bungalows are similar to the rooms in the two-storey building and although these also come with a fridge, they're probably not worth the price tag. The staff are fairly helpful and speak good English. This is a convenient spot for those wanting to be in the thick of Kanchanaburi's nightlife. Although it's set back from the main road, noise from the bars could be an issue at night.

Surprisingly nice
We were almost put off by some of the reviews on here, but thought we'd take a look anyway. We went for a double room at 500b a night. The room isn't flashy, but does come with air con & a TV, a fairly comfy bed (actually it's two singles pushed together) and is very clean. We got towels, soap & shampoo and bed covers. The staff are very friendly. The pool is very nice and the place seems popular, mainly with families. There's also free wifi which can be a little patchy, but I've still had plenty of online time. The food here is great (fairly extensive Thai & international menu) and reasonably priced. Certainly better than many of the offerings on the nearby street. At 500b a night I think it's excellent value.

Very good value for money
We stayed at Pong Phen Guest House for 3 nights in July 2010 at one of the bungalows (BB, the one closest to the river). We paid THB 1000 per night with breakfast for 2 persons included (normally THB 70 per person). We also took a look at the rooms around the pool, which we think may be also nice and cheaper (around THB 600 if I remember well) but we opted for a bit of privacy and room space. We must also admit that the rooms down by the river did not look very good and probably should be avoided if you can afford to spend some extra money for better options. The most expensive rooms (THB 1300) overlook the river, are nicely decorated and very spacious. Overall, we liked our stay there very much: the room and the bathroom are very clean and spacious, there is a fridge and TV, A/C is very effective and quite silent, the bungalows have small roofed verandas where you can dry your clothes or sit with a beer in the evening. If you want to sit closer to the river, there is some kind of social area with tables, chairs and wooden swing for guests’ use. The pool is not big but nice enough to cool after a day trip. The guest house seems to attract a lot of Dutch travelers with some dishes on the blackboard menu like “Biterballen”. Breakfast are OK, Thai dishes are tasty although not very rich in ingredients (by the way, for a taste of real culinary treasures head to Apple’s Retreat and Restaurant on the other side of the river, on the right side after crossing the bridge). The guesthouse will do your laundry for a reasonable price and can take care of your transportation at any time – we wanted to take an early morning bus to Bangkok and they organized a tuk-tuk for 5am, when they cannot provide services of their drivers they will call for an inexpensive taxi, but remember to tell them in advance. The staff attitude is from neutral to friendly, generally no complaints. The drawbacks: - the pool was closed for one day during our stay - unfortunately, the place also seems popular with Western guys and their Thai “girlfriends”

Terrible Staff
Two female members of staff at Pong Penh guest house were extremely rude to my girlfriend and I during our stay. They were very unhelpful. Our room did not have enough bedsheets. When we asked for more, the staff were very reluctant and seemed to take offense to our polite request. From that time on, they were very rude to us whenever we asked about anything or tried to order food. I would certainly not stay here again, as there are plenty of nice guesthouses in Kanchanaburi with very pleasant staff.

JUST AWFUL!
I wish I could agree with the other reviews....as a single guest I fared badly here. Booked a 300b room with fan in the guesthouse - got a tiny, steamy hot room overlooking a swamp with no light or air. Worst of all was NO cover bed sheet (''we no have sheets'' they said!!!) and NO proper walls between the rooms, just decorative wooden dividers. you can hear every breath, word, cough, snore....of your fellow guests. the poolside area is nice enough and i think if you book an expensive room or a bungalow you may get better treatment. they didn't even clean my room in 3 days...young female staff only interested in attending to male customers from what i could see. these rooms were quite terrible and i wouldn't stay there again.

Very relaxing
We stayed in one of the bungalows for 900B, this place was great. It was central to everything, so we hired pushbikes and cycled our way around the sights. Pool was good for cooling down. Food and beer went down well. Good prices too.

Lovely stay
After 4 nites in Bangkok and a bus trip, this was a great place to stay. We stayed in one of the 5 bungalows for 900B including breakfast. Very relaxing, food was good and beer great as evenings seemed to get hotter then during the day. Very central to everything, walked to night markets, hired bikes to other stuff and swam in the pool to get over it all.
