Sugar Cane Guest House 2

A quiet and relaxing choice

Sugar Cane 2 is located a fair distance from the main backpacker enclave toward the River Kwai Bridge, making this friendly guesthouse a quiet and relaxing option. Sugar Cane 2 has two main options for accommodation -- rooms in a longhouse-style set up looking over the car park, and four air-con rooms in a rafthouse. The former are spotlessly clean and fairly good value, but the rafthouse is excellent value, with large and comfortable rooms and spotless bathrooms attached. They also have a large veranda, which is ideal for looking out over the river. A minor complaint is a lack of privacy, as the walls are paper-thin and the balconies are only separated by lattice. The rooms are simply decorated, but comfortable and attractive. The restaurant does typical backpacker fare and staff are very friendly. Recommended.

A good stay - 19th February, 2007
I spent two nights at Sugar Cane 2 in February: it's very close to "The Bridge", but still walking distance to where the bulk of guesthouses and bars are. The room was fairly pleasant (I had the room on the raft with air-con), very basic (i.e. no furniture besides the bed) but clean and very bright. The bathroom was ok too, even though hot water was constantly coming and going. Staff was friendly and helpful. I didn't particularly like the restaurant but I tried it just once (and maybe stumbled in a not-so-lucky choice).

Wonderful - 24th December, 2006
Didn't stay at the guesthouse but ate at the restaurant two times. Best lemon juice of my whole trip! Super-friendly staff, wonderful setting.

Beautiful setting, clean & comfortable rooms - 17th January, 2006
The setting here is perfect. Beautiful little bamboo huts nestled around lush gardens and it's right on the banks of the river. I paid 200B for a large room with huge bed, a fan and private bathroom. All very clean and airy. Nice cafe area where you can sit and watch the boats along the river. It's about a 15 minute walk into the main travellers centre but there are bars & restaurants scattered along the way. The nicest place I've stayed in on my trip so far.

A nice relaxing spot - 29th December, 2005
I stayed in one of the raft rooms which was very comfortable. It wasn't spotless, but it wasn't dirty either. As others have mentioned, the walls are pretty thin, but I didn't find noise to be a real issue. One note - you may find mosquito coils helpful - they are readily available from most shops. I was there during the River Kwai festival and I think my room cost 550B as the site says here. The staff was very friendly - the food was average ... probably better to eat from the market or in town. The guesthouse is an easy 10-15 minute walk from the bridge. Given the opportunity, I'd stay there again.

Idyllic location and friendly staff - 9th April, 2005
I was so sorry to leave this place! Take note that there are two Sugar Canes (1 and 2). The latter is newer and further north nearer the bridge, but I stayed in the older one, in one of the floating rooms on the river. I don't have a bad word to say about it. Even had a security guard manning the gates at all times! The owner was one of the most helpful and genuine people I met in Thailand. Also recommend the day tours that they organise for guests. Would love to think I'll go back there.

Clean, comfortable, and relaxing - 13th September, 2004
I stayed in one of the floating rooms. The room was spotless and the linen clean. The balcony -- right on the water -- was a comfortable place to relax. Bring a good dose of tolerance for noise from passing boats during the day and evening and from voices in adjoining rooms; I was able to tune out these distractions. Most staff were friendly and helpful. I plan to return often.
