Description
Towards the River Kwai Bridge end of Kanchanaburi, Sugar Cane 2 has two main options -- rooms in a longhouse style set up (with complimentary wagon wheels displayed out front) looking over the car park and four aircon rooms in a rafthouse. The former are pretty good value as they are very clean, but the rafthouse is excellent value as the rooms and attached bathrooms are spotless, and the large veranda looking out over the river ideal. A minor complaint is that the balconies are only separated by lattice -- a bit of plant-life between them would add to the privacy. The furnishings are spartan, but adequate and the bed firm. The restaurant does pretty typical backpacker fare and the staff here are very friendly. A relaxing and quiet option with a good central location. Recommended.

A good stay -
By silvia ( total comments: 7  More information please ) Stayed here 2/2007
I spent two nights at Sugar Cane 2 in February: it's very close to "The Bridge", but still walking distance to where the bulk of guesthouses and bars are. The room was fairly pleasant (I had the room on the raft with air-con), very basic (i.e. no furniture besides the bed) but clean and very bright. The bathroom was ok too, even though hot water was constantly coming and going. Staff was friendly and helpful. I didn't particularly like the restaurant but I tried it just once (and maybe stumbled in a not-so-lucky choice).

Wonderful -

Didn't stay at the guesthouse but ate at the restaurant two times. Best lemon juice of my whole trip! Super-friendly staff, wonderful setting.

Beautiful setting, clean & comfortable rooms -
By kiara ( total comments: 4  More information please ) Stayed here 1/2006
The setting here is perfect. Beautiful little bamboo huts nestled around lush gardens and it's right on the banks of the river. I paid 200B for a large room with huge bed, a fan and private bathroom. All very clean and airy. Nice cafe area where you can sit and watch the boats along the river. It's about a 15 minute walk into the main travellers centre but there are bars & restaurants scattered along the way. The nicest place I've stayed in on my trip so far.

A nice relaxing spot -

I stayed in one of the raft rooms which was very comfortable. It wasn't spotless, but it wasn't dirty either. As others have mentioned, the walls are pretty thin, but I didn't find noise to be a real issue. One note - you may find mosquito coils helpful - they are readily available from most shops. I was there during the River Kwai festival and I think my room cost 550B as the site says here. The staff was very friendly - the food was average ... probably better to eat from the market or in town. The guesthouse is an easy 10-15 minute walk from the bridge. Given the opportunity, I'd stay there again.

Idyllic location and friendly staff -

I was so sorry to leave this place!

Take note that there are two Sugar Canes (1 and 2). The latter is newer and further north nearer the bridge, but I stayed in the older one, in one of the floating rooms on the river. I don't have a bad word to say about it. Even had a security guard manning the gates at all times! The owner was one of the most helpful and genuine people I met in Thailand. Also recommend the day tours that they organise for guests. Would love to think I'll go back there.

Clean, comfortable, and relaxing -

I stayed in one of the floating rooms. The room was spotless and the linen clean. The balcony -- right on the water -- was a comfortable place to relax. Bring a good dose of tolerance for noise from passing boats during the day and evening and from voices in adjoining rooms; I was able to tune out these distractions. Most staff were friendly and helpful. I plan to return often.

Blue Star Guest House
241 Maenam Kwai Rd, Kanchanaburi
Rambling down from the main road to the river's edge, the very friendly and popular Blue Star boasts some excellent value rooms along with some more average options. Unusually the restaurant is at the rear of the resort, while the rooms run down in two long rows. The cheaper rooms up by the... more

Sam's House Guest House
14/2 Moo 1 Thamakham Rd, Kanchanaburi
Set amongst lush and well-loved gardens, Sam's House Guesthouse has some cheap rooms towards the rear of the resort with far better, moderately priced rooms towards the river's edge. The pleasant restaurant which does Thai and western food is well off the water, hidden amongst the jungle like... more

Apple's Guest House
52 Soi Rong Heeb Oil 3, Kanchanaburi
Apple Guesthouse seems to suffer from too much guidebook coverage, which can trigger some mixed reactions. Nevertheless, it has a great location at the junction of Rong Heeb Oil and Maenam Kwai roads and is often full to capacity. Well off the river, the bungalows and longhouse are set across... more

Jolly Frog Backpackers
28 Soi China, Kanchanaburi
The long-running Jolly Frog Backpackers is a backpacker favourite and while the spacious, hammock strewn lawn is indeed inviting, the rooms are much less so. The rafthouse rooms in particular are bad (though at 70B you cannot complain too much). Jolly Frog's mid-priced rooms are better value, but... more

V.N.Guesthouse
44 Rong Heeb Oil Rd, Kanchanaburi
Very long-running VN has spruced up their offerings and has one of the best rafthouses on the river in this area. The rafthouse is very clean and each room has its own private balcony -- an alternative to the communal balconies on many of the rafts. The rooms are very clean, though those with the... more

Bamboo House
5 Soi Vietnam, Kanchanaburi
Well isolated and just before the Bridge over the River Kwai, Bamboo House has a lovely and spacious lawn setting with a large lotus filled pond. There are a handful of single-room rafthouses to choose from along with a few duplex huts and some aircon chalets. The rafthouses and duplex huts are... more

Sugar Cane Guest House 1
22 Soi Pakistan, Kanchanaburi
Affiliated with Sugar Cane 2 further upriver, this is the scruffier of the two, but much more of a raft experience, given that there are 20 rooms on 4 rafts. The rooms on land are beginning to look at bit tatty but are clean enough for what you pay. The raft rooms are what people really come here... more

C&C Guest House
265/2 Moo 1 Maenam Kwai Rd, Kanchanaburi
This super-friendly spot was the backpacker #1 choice for years, and while the crowds have slowly drifted elsewhere, C&C remains as friendly as ever. Set in spacious grounds which can get a little swampy when the river is high, C&C has a bunch of basic bungalows and a couple of even more basic... more

River Guest House
46 Rong Heeb Oil Rd, Kanchanaburi
This is Turkey, that is Thailand is the mantra here. Under Thai/Turkish management, River Guest House has continued to make improvements and remains a popular hangout. There are several clean, green bungalows on stilts at the water's edge, each named after a destination in Turkey and all have... more

Luxury Hotel
284/1 Saeng Chuto Rd, Kanchanaburi
Perhaps not the most appropriately named hotel in Kanchanaburi, nevertheless, the Luxury Hotel occupies a brilliant location on the Saeng Chuto Road, just across from the war cemeteries and one street down from the railway station. The 39 fan and air-con rooms are all big, clean, and come with... more

Ponh Phen Guest House
5 Soi Bangladesh, Kanchanaburi
This is the sort of place that seems to attract repeat business and it's often hard to find a room here. The restaurant and reception area are at the end of the road on the left but sadly the space between here and the river has been turned into a car park, which may be important to some, but seems... more

Sam's River Rafthouse Guest House
48/1 Rong Heeb Oil Rd, Kanchanaburi
This is another of Sam's guesthouses in Kanchanaburi, and is a quiet, friendly place offering rooms on a couple of floating rafthouses and some rather basic fan rooms in a concrete building on the other side of the road opposite the reception area. The rooms on the rafts are pretty clean with... more

V.L. Guesthouse
277/45 Saeng Chuto Rd, Kanchanaburi
Right across the road from the River Kwai Hotel, this is a very friendly outfit offering 26 clean rooms, all with air-con, hot water and cable TV. It's not exactly the most beautifully located guesthouse in town, and the rooms don't get an awful lot of natural light, but it's an acceptable choice... more

Green View Guest House
40/2-5 Maenam Kwai Rd (Opposite Bangladesh Rd) Kanchanaburi
The Green View Guesthouse is tucked away up a leafy lane running away from the river off Maenam Kwai road. The whole place has a bit of a neglected feel to it but nevertheless the garden is well tended and shaded by large trees. The wooden rooms all have a weathered look and could do with a new... more

Mr Tee Guest House
12 Soi Laos, Kanchanaburi
This appears to be one of those guesthouses that was once popular but has fallen out of favour. Mr Tee himself doesn't seem to have done much to improve the appearance or quality of the rooms despite hiking up the prices along with everyone else. The two-storey rattan building looks like it could... more
