River Guest House
Disappointing river village

What we say:
The location of River Guest House is superb, near a number of sights in town and across the river from an undeveloped patch of coconut palms. At first glance, the guesthouse looks rather charming, with its village-like setting of plank walkways, stilt huts and a riverhouse set around a riverine garden of lotuses. The rooms alas are in a sorry state. The dark boathouse rooms stink of musty air and damp bamboo, and the view is wasted on decks only big enough to fit one chair. All rooms have cold showers, aside from one of the stilt houses (which, oddly, does not have a higher rate). The setting is still charming, and the passable green stilt-house rooms come with hammocks positioned perfectly for viewing the sunset. And you should be able to negotiate a decent price -- the rate on rafthouse rooms starts at around 500B, but should drop quickly once the guesthouse staff register the look of disbelief on your face.

Great views but basic
We arrived here at 21:00, they knew we were coming, but there was nobody there. :) after a while a man and woman turned up in their pyjamas and helped us to the room. The walk to the room over the uneven planks was kinda funny and the room was big, but the bathroom ... well, it was a bathroom, but the shower was more like a few drops of water. The atmosphere in the morning was very friendly, breakfast good and the 6am views when you wake up from the first speedboats on the river are just amazing. I wouldn't stay here again, while it was only 200B, they still have to go a long way in renovating.

Amazing Sunset Spot
The feedback from others seems unusually harsh, as our experience was even better than the 7 stars of the Travelfish reviewer. Quiet, scenic location right on the river, close to the war cemetery and the newish Death Railway Museum and not far from the train station. A double room with air-con and bath goes for 500B, but we opted for the floating room option right on the river, which had fridge and internet, for 800B (breakfast included). The restaurant was inexpensive and fantastic, and worth a visit if just for the views of the river. The staff was unenthusiastic but efficient. Some of the walkways are in need of attention, but the room platforms and the rooms themselves are in great shape. The owner is in the process of adding an online booking form. All in all a great stay.

Yikes.
I hate to think what this place was like before the renovation. We spent one cold, noisy uncomfortable night here before moving down the road to a nicer place. There were enormous cockroaches in our room, the bed boards were uneven and the blanket provided were disgusting. The evening staff was less than hospitable. Never again.
