Apple's Guest House
A retro holiday resort

What we say:
With its manicured tropical garden and slightly kitsch bamboo rooms, Apple's has the feel of a 1950s holiday resort. That vibe carries through in the friendly service and relaxed attitudes of guests who come for the cooking courses and great restaurant. Rooms are in a motel-like bamboo building, which forms a circle around an attractive garden filled with heliconia and mango trees. The simple bamboo rooms are clean and well maintained, though they're hot and a little overpriced for this area, especially the air-con rooms. The quality of mattresses varies greatly from one room to the next -- some are big and plush, others are flimsy and thin, so check around before you pick a room.

A little bit overpriced.
I stayed in a double room with fan for which I was charged 450B. The room was spacious and clean, and with a big extremely clean bathroom. The matress was fine. It is, however, overpriced, and as someone said in another review, it is a clear case ''guidebook-itis''. There are better value for money options in town.

Faultless
We stayed at Apple in May 2009 and the accommodation was faultless. Lovely clean modern rooms, with great mattresses! Apple and Noi and all of the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Only a short walk over the bridge to town, it's definitely a great place to stay in Kanchanaburi. We also did the cookery course. The kitchen was very modern and immaculate. We visited the local market in the morning with Noi and she was a very good guide. We tried lots of local foods and it was a great introduction to Thai cuisine. However, once we got into the kitchen, Noi turned into a bit of a Gorden Ramsey, and we felt we paid top dollar (or top baht) for a slightly stressful, very hot, cooking experience with no recipe book at the end (we had to write all the ingredients and instructions down ourselves which was quite difficult to do at the same time as cooking!). I've heard that Apple usually takes the cookery courses and I would recommend taking the course with her as she is probably more relaxed in the kitchen! If taking the cookery course bear in mind you don't get a recipe book, and you might well hear about their financial woes (we did, a lot!) so ask for Apple if possible. Overall, Apple's is a great place to stay and HIGHLY recommended.

New guesthouses
Apple and Noi will have broken down the old guesthouse by now. In the same street they have built new stone bungalows which are big, clean and with aircon. The bathroom is also big and with a separate shower. A double aircon room costs 600B. They call these bungalows 'Apple's guesthouse'. Across the river they have built new apartments and the new kitchen where Noi does her cooking classes (highly recommended, we loved it and Noi is full of stories when you are eating your just-cooked meal). They have a free pickup service from the new guesthouse and call this location 'Apple's Retreat'. We had a look over there during our cooking course and the rooms are so beautiful! When I go back to Kanchanaburi, I will definitely go to Apple's again!

Great food
Rating is for food, it's the best in Thailand: The yellow curry and tom kha gai were the best I've ever eaten. 9 points because you only get Western breakfasts in the morning -- how can this be?

Enjoy the experience
Fantastic food at a more than reasonable price totally. As mature travellers on a budget we found the food so fantastic we returned the following night, not to be disappointed. Prices are more than competitive with similar restaurants of their style, however no one else could compare with the warm & charming hospitality. For two ladies working around the clock running a restaurant, building another, all with guest rooms, organising tours, running cooking classes as well as trying to have their own life, I take my hat off to them. As a fellow restaurateur I wish I had half their stamina & energy. For those bitching over a couple of baht, continue backpacking while eating off the street. Give credit where credit is due and start looking past yourselves. Cheers to Apple, Noi, and the crew. Best of luck for the new place. We will definitely be there. Janine, Tracey, Kaz & Michelle.

Great food, great people
We stayed in Apple's Guesthouse for two days in early June 2007. The rooms are spacious and EXTREMELY clean. The garden area is quiet and very well cared for. It is apparent that detail is carefully minded. We travelled with A.S. on trip 117. We felt we got very good value for the price. The food at Apple's is FANTASTIC. Much like the lodging, you can see that details are of the utmost importance. From timing to presentation, the service is very nice. Every dish we have tried has tasted very fresh and obviously made to order. There is no mass production here. Furthermore, the service of Apple, Noi, and staff is professional, yet fun and informing. Noi insists you order in Thai (with her assistance of course), providing many laughs and a little education as well. All guests at Apple's with us seem equally pleased. Lodging here is a bit more costly than the competition. However, if you must quibble over 100B, maybe you should think about heading home!!!

Overrated restrauant
The restaurant is well overrated and expensive to boot. I agree with the main article here, it's a clear case of 'guidebook-itis', when coverage means the place is always going to get business given the coverage it's had, and standards can then slip.

Great food
Didn't stay here but had a meal and it was fantastic -- one of the top two or three meals I have had in Thailand so far (rating here is for food only).

Ok, but not great
Didn't stay here but ate at the restaurant a couple of times. Food is good but nothing special, and a lot more expensive than other places in town. Tours are also more expensive. I guess they figure that because they're so popular they can charge more. Overall somewhat disappointing.

Eat here!
Didn't stay here but the guesthouse restaurant is excellent. Laidback atmosphere & better than average service. The food was fresh and tasty. Had a memorable meal.

Overated
Only popped in for food, which was admittedly decent, but nothing special. You can get better food at a quarter of the price from street vendors.

Disappointed
We expected great things from reading the guidebook ... clean, friendly etc. We were disappointed. We were asked to pay upfront for a room (300B double with fan) which was hot and not very clean. We found it hard to get friendly service and even info about the tours offered so we moved elsewhere and found cheaper, cleaner rooms with friendlier staff. we considered doing the cookery course but spoke to others who were disappointed because they skipped the market tour and finished early at 1pm ... didn't sound like value for money.

Was great!!!
We went down to Apple's nearly everyday for food. It was so good we decided to try the cooking course. If your going to do a course in Thailand, I definitely recommend Apple's. The trip to the morning market was a highlight. Also the rooms here are good and very reasonably prices. But even, if you don't stay here be sure to visit the restaurant and, if you have time, do the course.

Greta place to stay!
Sawasdee! My friend and I stayed here for a few days, went rafting and elephant riding and went on the one-day cooking course -- it was brilliant! One of my favourite places we visited in Thailand. The food is beautiful in the restaurant and the staff are lovely!

Great guide
AS travel connected us with Tic, a young guide who was amazing. His gentle nature and wonderful enthusiasm was a highlight of our Thai travels. We spent four days with him. He knew the ins and outs of the jungle, introduced us to Buddhism, plants, animals, the Hmong tribe and many other wonderful parts of Thailand that we would otherwise not have found. Connecting with him was amazing!!! I highly recommend that you seek him out. Guest house itself was average, but being with Tic on the road was incredible. My rating is not for the guest house but for Tic.

Food and drink not what it's cracked up to be
I had heard loads of rave reviews about this restaurant so was eager to try it for myself. Imagine my disappointment when all I found was cold, overpriced 'westernised' Thai fare. Very ordinary indeed. Try SutJai on the other side of the river for some proper Thai cuisine.
