Chilled out rafthouses

What we say:
The centrepiece of VN Guesthouse is a large, blocky rafthouse. Rooms are large and fairly clean, though the furniture is a bit worn, and the laminate floors are scuffed and torn. Perhaps the best thing about the rafthouse is that each room has its own private balcony overlooking a wide and scenic stretch of the river -- though note that all rafthouse rooms don't actually face the river. Air-con rooms in the building on the river's edge are fairly clean and come with TVs, hard beds and bamboo furniture. Some have a very odd design with the bed stuck behind the bathroom. Overall the accommodation offers solid budget value but lacks charm or style. The restaurant however is a cut above many other guesthouse restaurants. We found the staff to be soft-spoken but pleasant. WiFi is free. The location down Rongheabaoy Road stays quiet and isn't too far from the town centre or traveller strip. Overall this is a decent and very laidback choice.

Peacefull
We had booked this guesthouse for 9 nights. We booked a raft room with riwer view with hot water in the shower. The room isn't brand new but it has charm. Loved sitting with my boyfriend on the balcony watching the sunset.( and we had the sun all day). The bed was good , the pillow was perfect. The staff was always helpfull and smiling. The owner is loud and funny. Not everybody speak fluent english , but that doesn't matter when they understand you and make themself understood in all other possible ways. The food is great , and cheap. But if you get ''sea legs'' don't choose the raft rooms ;) If we are going back to Kanchanaburi we will stay here again :)

friendly vibes
i stayed on one of the rafts, oke the walls are thin but you can sit down on your balcony and see the river passing by so... its about 2km from the bridge so you can avoid the mass tourism in the daytime and go there early in the morning or later at night if i would go back to kanchanaburi i would stay there again!

Ok, passable
I paid 400bh for twin bed air con room. The concrete one. Clean blanket and towels.Room is ok, reasonably large. Basic facilities, no tv. Hot shower works, but the sink needs a bit of plumbing work. The cafe is cosy, situated at higher level and the view of the river is gorgeous. Only 1 staff speak Engl;ish, the owner I think. Overall I would give 3.5 stars out of 5. There could be cheaper rooms with same facilities.

Good choice.
Good value. Paid 280B for an ''odd-designed'' big and clean room with fan and hot water. Friendly staff. Would stay here again. Good river views from both the room and the restaurant.

great value & good food
Fantastic people. Raft room has paper thin walls but great views onto the river. Concrete rooms are a bizarre design with no ventilation in the bathroom. Daytime noise from loud longtails and night time from karaoke boats although these were not as bad as expected. Great restaurant - excellent bacon & HP sauce! Just far enough away from the dodgy bars offering alternative services.

restful and large
Came to Kanchanaburi at the end of a 6-wk holiday and found my way to VN Guesthouse. Got a fan room at 280B on the raft and stayed the final 10 days of my holiday here. The only room available was a triple but I wasn't charged anymore. The staff were very helpful, always smiling and very sympathetic when I tripped on the pavement and sprained my arm. Very quiet too as it is well down Rong Heeb Oil Rd along the banks of the River Kwai.

Basic rooms, but great people!
Stayed in an air-con rafthouse room, which was fine and had a great river view, though the furniture and floors were a bit scuffed up. However, the staff here is a lot of fun and very welcoming, and the restaurant is a cut above most guesthouse restaurants. I had a good time, and would come back again.

Good choice
Ditto on all the positive comments from above. 250 Baht for a spacious and clean fan room. Good food and nice views on the deck/restaurant. Recommended.

Good Value, Recommended
This guest house is a very good value. I paid 280 for a fan room overlooking the river. Couple of small problems like 'reservation', broken shower handle, step in the middle of room and not lit at all; but overall this was a great basic spot. The people running the guest house are very nice, good restaurant, halfway comfortable beds, good location, nice balcony and great view. I would stay again and believe it is a great value.

good spot, great views
We stayed in an aircon room with a view of the river. The room was small and dark but we spent most of the time outside looking down the river. The restaurant is at road level so a fair way above the river. On a hot day water was sprayed over the roof which cooled things down and was a nice touch. Easy going atmosphere with lots of fish in tubs and some greenery.

Loved loved loved it!
I would highly recommend this place. We stayed in the corner room on the raft and while it was very basic it was comfortable and all we need - at 450 baht you cant go wrong. What I loved the most was a great location, a good travel desk (which was never pushed on you), some of the BEST and CHEAPEST food in Thailand and cheap internet. Friendly staff, Mango Shakes to die for and the best little chill out spot for dinner and drinks! xx

A great spot
This is a great spot! Raft rooms can get hot so maybe air-con next time. The restaurant is in a perfect spot overlooking river. Staff are quiet, which is part of their charm. We still get "thank you for staying" emails. Would not stay anywhere else. Joan and Lorna.

Wish I could stay longer
Stayed in the a/c raft room. It was excellent for the price and a great experience. Clean and relatively new. The walls were a bit thin (as expected) but we had good neighbours. The entire rafthouse sways a bit when boats pass by but its tolerable except for those easiest afflicated by seasickness. The lady manager was very helpful and went of her way to help us sort out the mix-up in reservation. The food was reasonably good but unfortunately the kitchen closes at 9 pm. No problems parking my rented car.

Yes, but...
VN has clean but basic rooms and an appealing position on the river. I was charged 320bt for a fan room on the raft with hot shower. Maybe it was me, but the staff seemed indifferent/moody - with the exception of the Travel excursion women who was lovely. Food was okay, but nothing really special. There are plenty other options in this area, and this really doesn't stand out.

Really pleased with our choice
We stayed at VN for a couple of nights at the end of January and would recommend it. The double air-con room was basic but clean with a wet room and hot shower. We also liked the bamboo table and chairs outside the room for a spot of chilling out while the sun set. The restaurant serves great food and the staff are always helpful, if a little quiet. Top Spot!

So comfy we stayed two weeks!
We had a lovely stay at the VN Guesthouse. The family that run the place are a bit quiet, but always smiling and friendly. The guy on reception speaks English, but is very quiet. The restaurant is beautiful and we recommend the pineapple pancakes and french toast, oh and the Strawberry Lassi yum! We stayed in the concrete air-conditioned rooms behind the rafts. Our shared balcony opened out onto the river and the room was clean and comfy. The shower did have an annoying habit of tripping out every 5 mins, but there is just a switch that you keeping putting back up and although the rooms were a bit dark, with such beautiful surroundings and so much to do in Kanchanaburi you just don't spend that much time in there so it didn't matter. We spent two weeks there and got one night free as well so that was a bonus! All in all, probably the nicest place to stay in Kanchanaburi!
