Description
The seven brightly coloured bungalows at Rainbow Lodge perch crowded together on a hilltop over the river. The fan rooms make good use of available space with the bedroom up in the roof area, leaving the downstairs free for lounging around. The air-con rooms, however, are rather cramped with an odd selection of furniture. The glass-fronted VIP rooms at the water's edge have great views over the river but are a bit pricey given their size. The owners are exceedingly friendly, and determined to make the place succeed. They offer free pickups from the bus or train stations, free internet, discounts on longer stays and a free trip to the Tiger Temple if you stay for more than three nights. They even have a riverside platform with a collection of fitness equipment and run a cookery school. While the rooms aren't spectacular, the staff seems intent to make up for it with their extra service.

Staff friendly and helpful. Free internet for guests was great. Breakfast not good value but lunch/dinner was good. Room bit run down, couch completely broken so could not sit comfortably.Bed in loft was cool, but needed mozzie net as holes to outside round windows etc. 350 B and was supposed to get discount with the flyer from train station (said this on flyer) but no discount.

Stayed here for 1 night. The place was deserted and the room was small and a bit run down. On the plus side, it was very clean. We ended up moving to another guesthouse for two more nights.

More options in Kanchanaburi
Blue Star Guest House
241 Maenam Kwai Rd, Kanchanaburi
Rambling down from the main road to the river's edge, the wooden stilt cabins at Blue Star sit packed tightly together over a murky swamp. The very friendly and popular guesthouse boasts some excellent value rooms, along with some more average options. In general, accommodation is fairly basic, but... more
Sugar Cane Guest House 2
7 Soi Cambodia, Kanchanaburi
Sugar Cane 2 is located a fair distance from the main backpacker enclave toward the River Kwai Bridge, making this friendly guesthouse a quiet and relaxing option. Sugar Cane 2 has two main options for accommodation -- rooms in a longhouse-style set up looking over the car park, and four air-con... more
Sam's House Guest House
14/2 Moo 1 Thamakham Rd, Kanchanaburi
Sam's House Guest House has rows of log cabin-style rooms perched over a swamp. Though the reed-choked water is attractive, the half-sunken fountains that litter the grounds and the unattractive metal catwalk that leads between rooms spoil the scenery. The cabins themselves are fairly pleasant and... more
Apple's Guest House
52 Soi Rong Heeb Oil 3, Kanchanaburi
With its manicured tropical garden and slightly kitsch bamboo rooms, Apple's has the feel of a 1950s holiday resort. That vibe carries through in the friendly service and relaxed attitudes of guests who come for the cooking courses and great restaurant. Rooms are in a motel-like bamboo building,... more
Jolly Frog Backpackers
28 Soi China, Kanchanaburi
The long-running Jolly Frog is an old backpacker's favourite, and if you stay here you're likely to mingle with some ageing regulars. Aside from the rock-bottom prices, it's a little difficult however to see what keeps them all streaming back. Staff can be rude and disorganised, and while the... more
V.N.Guesthouse
44 Rong Heeb Oil Rd, Kanchanaburi
The centrepiece of V.N. Guesthouse is a large, blocky rafthouse. Rooms are huge and fairly clean, though the furniture is a bit worn, and the laminate floors are scuffed and torn. Perhaps the best thing about the rafthouse is that each room has its own private balcony -- though not all face the... more
Bamboo House
5 Soi Vietnam, Kanchanaburi
Floating across from a wild stretch of palm trees and riverweeds, the rafts at Bamboo House offer an ideal spot for relaxation. With just a mattress on the floor, the rooms are unquestionably primitive -- but they create the perfect atmosphere for kicking back and chilling out. The rafthouses have... more
Sugar Cane Guest House 1
22 Soi Pakistan, Kanchanaburi
Sugar Cane Guest House 1 provides some of the best rafthouses in Kanchanaburi. Affiliated with Sugar Cane 2 further upriver, Sugar Cane 1 offers much more of a raft experience, with 20 rooms on four rafts. The rooms on land are a little smaller than the bungalows at Sugar Cane 2, but are... more
C&C Guest House
265/2 Moo 1 Maenam Kwai Rd, Kanchanaburi
This super-friendly spot was the top backpacker choice for years, and while the crowds have slowly drifted elsewhere, C&C remains as friendly as ever. Set in spacious grounds which can get a little swampy when the river is high, C&C has a bunch of basic bungalows and a couple of even more basic... more
River Guest House
46 Rong Heeb Oil Rd, Kanchanaburi
The location of River Guest House is superb, near a number of sights in town and across the river from an undeveloped patch of coconut palms. At first glance, the guesthouse looks rather charming, with its village-like setting of plank walkways, stilt huts and a riverhouse set around a riverine... more
Luxury Hotel
284/1 Saeng Chuto Rd, Kanchanaburi
Though it's a little deceptively named, Luxury Hotel is one of the best options for city centre accommodation. The 39 fan and air-con rooms are all big, clean, and come with cable TV and an extra movie channel. Rooms are decorated in pale pastels, and most feature large windows looking out on a... more
Ponh Phen Guest House
5 Soi Bangladesh, Kanchanaburi
Though Pong Penh has a huge variety of rooms, it's often hard to get in here as it seems to attract a lot of loyal repeat business. Pong Penh has a friendly tropical atmosphere, with crowds of happy travellers gathered around the bar and the large swimming pool. Rooms are offered in a motel-like... more
Sam's River Rafthouse Guest House
48/1 Rong Heeb Oil Rd, Kanchanaburi
Another of Sam's guesthouses in Kanchanaburi, this is a quiet place offering rooms on a neon green floating rafthouse and some rather basic fan rooms in a concrete building on the other side of the road. All the rooms are equipped with air-con, so you only pay extra if you want to use it. The rooms... more
V.L. Guesthouse
277/45 Saeng Chuto Rd, Kanchanaburi
Right across the road from the River Kwai Hotel, this is a very friendly outfit offering 26 clean rooms, all with air-con, hot water and cable TV. The startlingly purple hallway leads from the lobby to an attractive courtyard draped with flowers, and on to the dimly lit corridor of rooms. It's not... more
Green View Guest House
40/2-5 Maenam Kwai Rd (Opposite Bangladesh Rd) Kanchanaburi
The Green View has the mossy green feel of an abandoned plantation. Tucked away on a leafy lane off Maenam Kwai Rd, it's surrounded by an overgrown forest of banana palms and mango trees. The paint on the bungalows is chipped and faded, but looks more charmingly weathered than rundown. Rooms are... more
