P Guest House
Comfortable rooms in the Wild West

What we say:
Though the buffalo skulls and cowboy bar perhaps take the joke of being in Thailand's 'Wild West' a little too far, P Guest House offers some of the finest accommodation in Sangkhlaburi. One of the longest-running guesthouses in town, P Guesthouse attracts a loyal Thai and Western clientele. The rooms are all large, comfortable and spotlessly clean, though the stone walls do have a bit of a Flintstones feel. The fan rooms with shared bathroom are some of the best value rooms in town, as they're just as clean and comfortable as the more expensive air-con rooms. The English-speaking staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and can offer advice on transport and sightseeing. They also offer some very good value tours. Though the restaurant rarely garners great reviews, it has an unmatched view over the lake and across to the Mon village. Since it's very popular with Thai travellers escaping Bangkok, P Guesthouse can get busy on the weekends, but on week days you may well have the place to yourself. Motorbikes, bicycles and canoes are available for hire. Recommended.

Sleep here, eat elsewhere
We spent 3 nights in 2 seperate AC rooms, and although I wouldn't say it was fantastic value at 950 without breakfast, the rooms are very clean and the views are stunning. The guesthouse is located in the main traveller area (pretty mild by Thailand standards), which is effectively a 'leafy suburb' located about 15 minutes walk from the centre of the main village and 10 minutes from the wooden bridge. This sounds a lot but it is fine as long as you avoid walking in the heat of the day. The village centre itself is interesting to just wander round, people watch and just soak up the atmosphere, although there are comparatively few 'things to do'. Graph Cafe have a great little map for 20b that lists all the good cafes in town. The restaurant food was pretty average despite the lovely setting, and much more expensive than other options in town. There are several attractive traveller oriented cafes nearby (the food in Bann Unruk and Birdland are good, and Burmese Inn less so, and Graph cafe has very good coffees and shakes in a trendy atmosphere, once ouy have rowsed the owners from the Sofa.) The staff are changeable, they were fairly surly on the first day, but by the end were much more friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend staying here, but there are also some new options not mentioned here on Travel Fish that might be worth checking out, namely Haiku and Coffee Berry, and a few home stays used by volunteers/NGO types.

Mixed Feelings About This Place
I showed up mid-week and was surprised to find no fan rooms available. So on the first night I spent 900 baht for an a/c room with a grand view over the lake. The room was lovely. The feel wasn't Flintstones, but more 1950s suburbo-American dream. Bathroom, esp. shower area, was large with soap and shampoo dispensers on the wall. The towels were a bit scratchy for this class of accommodation. And why would you provide a nice new TV with a total of just 8 channels? Second night I stayed in a 250 baht fan room, down towards the lake. This was a tad Paleolithic; the walls are concrete with inset stones; the ceiling is round beams about the thickness of your arm. There are two cow skulls on the walls (we're in the Wild West, ya know). Windows on two sides and a private little veranda with 2 chairs, a tiny table and a big view. Great value. The restaurant's food was undistinguished -- not bad, but nothing special and ordered from a rather limited menu. Beer is pricey and available only in big bottles. As a whole I'd say the staff didn't comes across as especially welcoming and cheerful. The bicycle I rented for an excessive 70 baht/day was kinda crappy; the chain kept slipping and came clean off at one point. Finally, note that this place is quite a ways from the center -- perhaps 25-30 minute walk, uphill a good part of the way. I came away with decidedly mixed feelings about P Guesthouse. (My value rating of 7 is averaged from 9 for the fan room and 5 for the a/c room).

Great Place
P Guesthouse defintley made my stay in Sangklhaburi. The view is just amazing right on top of the lake and it is superb value for the rooms, cleanliness and superb service from the staff. It actually feels like you're staying in an expensive resort when it fact you are spending 250 baht - I had lake views from my front and back windows!! The restaurant has a great ambience and views to die for, but the food is bland for Thailand and overpriced - eat in town if you can. I did the elephant/lake/rafting tour which I thought was nice and good value. All up, 2 thumbs up for P Guesthouse!

Overrated
We stayed at Chan Chan Lay after staying here and I have to say what a difference 100 baht makes. P Guesthouse is simple and clean, but there's definitely better value for money in Lanta. I wasn't really impressed with P to be honest, though there was nothing wrong with it per se. The rooms were small & there's no much around in terms of location.

Pleasant Stay, but Noisy
250 for a fan room and shared cold water shower and squat toilet (I stayed 5 days) -- Reasonably priced cos of the cleanliness and the wood finish to the rooms and amazing views Room 11-13 Unfortunately the rooms are over the restaurant downstairs, so it can be noisy until 11pm and its a wooden structure so the noise does travel Likewise if there is a Thai tour group at the adjoining property, you will share in the 'delights' of karaoke until 11pm (there seems to be a general agreement to finish around 11pm) 30baht to rent a towel (I left mine outside to 'dry' and it rained, I wasn't charged for its replacement The Resort is finished to an unusually high standard for a Thai owned resort I didn’t eat in the restaurant, so no comment on the food, but the prices seem high and i'd recommend elsewhere to chow and beer 950 baht for (1) One night fan accommodation (2) 45 minute boat ride (3) 90 minute elephant ride (4) 1 hour rafting – Not bad value, the scenery is amazing and I would consider it good value – Obviously its not extensive, but gives a nice taste Overall, the area is amazing BUT it can be noisy until 11pm at night – I would recommend it The staff are by Thai standards, OK -- But its obvious that service is limited (eg 10baht charge to call a motorbike taxi to take u to the bus station)

Crowed on weekends
Arrived on a Friday night, had some trouble getting a room for two nights and had to switch. Paid 400 Baht for a dbl with shared bath...really clean bathroom, but squat toilets only. Hardest bed I've ever slept on. Good food and awesome sunsets...the place to be!

nice place
I stayed 2 nights in P guesthouse. It's a bit far from the bus ''station'', but it's a short walk from the wooden bridge. It is a beautifu place and has a nice view of the lake. They rent canoes for THB150. I paid THB250 for a room with shared bathroom. The bathrooms are clean and the showers have good pressure. The food there is good. It has expensive internet access, THB40/hour. In front of the bus ''station'' it's THB20/h. Tehre is a noisy and loud karaoke near the guesthouse. Room 13 is far from it, but room 11 is close.

All round, Wow!
Amazing rooms, amazing views, beautiful grounds, excellent location. Friendly staff. Lots of activities on offer. Good food. The best on offer in Sangkhlaburi. Unfortunately had to move nextdoor to Ponatee (poo tree) as P Guesthouse was fully booked by thai tourists for New Years

Great lakefront rooms
Stayed here twice, once in a 200B double with shared bathroom, and once in an air-con lakefront room for 800B. Both were a good deal; the shared bathrooms are clean and big, and the lakefront room was palatial and well worth the money. Food is merely OK, but this place has a cool chill-out vibe and is a good place to unwind. However, it's best to avoid Saturday nights, as the place gets totally booked out with Thais coming in from Bangkok for the weekend.

Booking problem
I just tried to book a 3 night stay but was told I also had to take a tour package, totalling 2200 Baht for 2 people incl. A/C room for 1 night ( usually 750 Bt per night, room not per person ). I only wanted to stay in the fan rooms with bathroom for 550 Bt and just enjoy the lake and read for 3 days ! It doesn't mention this requirement on their website and I think its a bit of a swizz, especially as a single person could presumably get that trip plus A/C room for 1100 Baht and they asked me for double that for the same room. Feel a bit cheated and its annoying!

Nice but not on holidays.
Great location, great views, great facilities, great staff, but lousy food. DO NOT stay here during holidays or even weekends, unless you love crowds and noise. We stayed during a holiday weekend (mistake going in the first place, but we really didn't think anyone would be around) and were charged B200 for a tent! Getting a bungalow was out of the question as everything was fully booked. Also, we had to pay full price for our ''tent'' upfront. Food was dealt with on the honour system. BUT, we found a room at the Burmese Inn the next morning and P-Guest House refunded our money and didn't make us pay for our meals. Very nice. So, I'd definitely stay here again, but only during a non-holiday weekday. It is a very lovely spot with beautiful views across the lake.

Not pricey at all
I don't find 200 baht for a perfectly OK room expensive, considering the setting - this place is popular with Thais and can get a bit noisy. A good swimming spot, where you can dive into the lake, you don't have to stay here to go for a swim and can sunbathe on the grass even if you stay elsewhere. This is also the place to go in Sangkhlaburi to hire kayaks.
