What we say: 3.5 stars

Located just west of the river across from the old town, KP Grand is not only Chanthaburi's largest hotel but also its tallest building. If looking for extras, this is your place -- a cavernous lobby, swimming pool, sauna, Thai massage, fitness centre, karaoke bar, conference room, restaurant, coffee shop and an army of bell hops are all available to guests staying in one of the hotel's 202 rooms. The standard we checked out was comfortable and spacious but uninspiring; it struck us as suitable for business travellers but not those on holiday. All rooms come with all the fixings you would expect at a place like this -- air-con, hot water, TV, fridge, free WiFi. If you can't do without a pool and fitness then KP is a perfectly fine choice, but we favoured Kasemsarn due to it offering a lot more character. We were told by staff that rates from booking sites like agoda.com are usually cheaper than the walk-in rates.
