Samed Villa
Well-managed midrange option

What we say:
This elegant resort has a selection of well-designed, spotlessly clean duplex bungalows tucked across a beautifully landscaped tropical garden. Located at the secluded southern end of the beach, this property is close to the best-known beaches, yet maintains a sense of isolation. The 35 rooms have a sitting area with TV, and decks that are afforded partial privacy thanks to ferns and palms. The pale-brown bungalows have views over the beach and out to sea. Samed Villa is by far the flashiest accommodation on Ao Phai although it remains reasonably priced, given what you'll pay on other beaches for far less. The restaurant doesn't match the accommodation (though the samlie fish, a special dish on the menu here, is unfailingly fresh and delicious). Rates include breakfast. Speedboat pick-up available at Sangsamut pier in Ban Phe.

Samed Villas has got to be one of the better places I've stayed at in LOS. True, I normally stay backpacker standard, but I have experience of at least half a dozen Thai midrangers and I can't think of any which can beat this. Our room was the cheapest available, up the back, Bt 1600/night, with breakfast. This meant we were far from all the night life noise from neighbouring properties, but still only a minute's walk through the lush heavily landscaped grounds to the sea. Our room was beautifully appointed and had none of the shoddy workmanship of lots of Thai building construction. The bed and pillows were divine, the big overhead fan was sometimes all we needed, though the aircon was efficient and silent, and because Lady Tezza is as a tea addict, the water boiler, cups and refrigerator were much appreciated. All of the windows were screened, with an internal fly-screen door at the entrance, and the room had plenty of good lighting, a TV, safe, mini-bar supplies, and lots of towels. The front verandah was nice but a bit useless except for drying towels etc as there was only a bush view and the mosquitoes were bad, day or night. Service was good. The restaurant was airy with excellent service and the inclusive buffet breakfast really good value. Food prices at other times was maybe 20% over budget levels but we found the nightly seafood BBQ good value and the candle-lit tables on sand real nice. There are several alternative budget eats joints nearby. There are plenty of sun lounges with umbrellas out the front and a bouyed-off swimming area with pretty clean, not too shallow water. Sun lounges are also spread a good 100m around the rockside path towards Ao Pudsa which is less than 5 minutes walk away. Snorkelling off these rocks was less than whelming - typical Samet. Ao Hin Kok is a similar distance in the opposite direction so you have plenty of choices for nice stretches of sand - and good places to dine.

Very good
The beach-front bungalows at Samed Villas are great, the best accommodation on Samet's east coast. And at the flash places on the west coast the beach is not nearly as nice. But beware the bungalows further back, most have no views and as the bungalows are fairly small they're not nearly as good value.
