Description
An old time favourite, Candle Light Resort has basic wooden bungalows overlooking the beach. Though the interiors are looking a little worn, they're still cute, with a mishmash of colours and patterns. The huts all have lots of light and decent toilets. Very friendly and accommodating staff is an extra asset. The large wooden huts with porches are fan-cooled with cold-water baths, while the concrete air-con huts have hot water. This is one of the few places left on Samet where you can enjoy nothing but sand between your hut and the water. Making a telephone booking here is highly recommended as it is often full -- particularly on the weekends.

My favorite place! -

I lived just about 40 minutes from Ko Samet for a couple of years and this was where I spent my holidays and long weekends. I traveled this island many times and Candle Light Resort and Horizons Restaurant still are clear in my mind as one of my favorites- Completely laid back, come to relax, not the place to stay to party, but a great little getaway! I love the staff- they were always so kind! Horizons had super cocktails, with a super atmosphere and beach view- food is awesome if Gai-(guy) is still working there!

I stayed here on my first trip to Thailand in 2006 and we spent 4 days here. It was great! If you want to get away from all the tourists this resort is the place to be. we stayed at the bangalows pictured above. they are clean and in good order. The food was excellent and affordable. We arrived on a monday as everyone was leaveing and had the beach to ourselves for the whole time. The water is cool and refreshing (not overly warm)and is a great break from the heat. We did not even manage to get off the beach but instead just laid low and enjoyed the peace and quite. The snorkling offered down the beach is ok but if you want to just sleep in a hamock and read a book while kicking back this is the place to do it. If you are going to rent a bike be aware that the roads are pretty bad (dirt and sand) metal rebar sticks out in patches. but the island is small and if you want to head to one of the main beaches you can grab a truck and head to those to watch kickboxing and find a party.

Yes, definitely the best place on Ao Thian. Further north you get the karaoke singing and dancing visitors and further south towards Ao Lung Dam it's really quite shabby - and there are more buildings going up between Candlelight resort and Horisons. We also got our lovely, wooden bungalow for 600 baht after a night in an AC concrete (and not as nice) bungalow for 800. The sea was crystal clear and clean, with powder white sand - just lovely. Only the restaurants let us down, very westernised unfortunately. However, nice BBQ at Mr Deng's right at the northern end, good desserts and cocktails at Horisons and the best Thai food at Sang Thian kitchen - I think because it's very popular with the locals. The Apache restaurant is quite fun and atmospheric at night with supper on the pier but not for a place to stay.

Top spot and very friendly staff -

We stayed here 4 days (15 to 18 june) and payed 600 BTH for a wooden bungalow with fan, private bathroom and a porch out front. The room was good, but it could use some storage space or a small table or something. The bathroom was ok, with Western toilet (but flush with bucket) and shower. The only downside was that after a shower the enire bathroom was wet, and when you came back in from the beach the bathroom would turn into a mudpool sometimes...
The staff is very friendly here, but there is no restaurant. For eating we had to visit the neighbours up north, they served good food. The Horizons restaurant that Travelfish wrote about is down south, but didn't serve food when we were there. Maybe because it was low season..? Anyway, a lovely place that I really recommend. The scenery and the beach is unbeatable and one of best on Koh Samet. And is not as busy as the beaches up north, but still plenty of activity during the weekend.

Sang Thian Beach Resort
Ao Thian, Ko Samet
Located at the northern end of Ao Thian, this resort is a treehouse-like village running up the hill. Neat stone-tiled bathrooms, air-con and full amenities make this a solid choice for the flashpacker set. They have a book exchange and an outdoor restaurant in a lovely location right above the... more

Ban Keang Talea
Ao Thian, Ko Samet
Though its bungalows have the feel of national park accommodation, they're large, and rather smart in a rustic way. Rooms are simply furnished but generally comfortable, with firm mattresses and clean bathrooms. They're located on the nicest section of the beach, a long stretch of smooth sand... more

Horizons
Between Ao Thian and Ao Lung Dam, Ko Samet
Horizons is one of the friendliest, most inviting spots on the beach. It has clean bright bungalows, set up along the hill behind a colourful reception and bar. The roomy bungalows have pleasant decks, which are great for hanging out and enjoying the view down to the beach. The owners seem to be... more
